On August 5, Thu Duc Regional General Hospital announced that Professor Cheng, Head of the Department of Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung (Taiwan), had just had a business trip to the hospital and assisted in vascular intervention to save two patients with complex coronary artery lesions.
Previously, Thu Duc Regional General Hospital received two elderly patients with complex coronary artery disease. Both had a history of hypertension, diabetes and had frequent chest pain, which greatly affected their daily activities.
Initial coronary angiography results of both patients showed severe left coronary artery stenosis and chronic complete occlusion of the right coronary artery.
Professor Cheng supports the medical team at Thu Duc Regional General Hospital in performing vascular intervention for patients.
According to Dr. Tran Nhan Nghia, Head of the Interventional Cardiology Unit, Thu Duc Regional General Hospital, in cases with complex coronary artery lesions like the two patients above, re-opening coronary blood flow by stenting is often very difficult and has a low success rate. Most patients will need open heart surgery to create blood bridges for the area of the heart muscle with narrowed blood vessels.
However, with the professional experience and enthusiastic guidance of Professor Cheng, along with the effective application of the intravascular ultrasound method, the team of doctors at Thu Duc Regional General Hospital successively performed intravascular intervention, successfully placed stents for both patients, completely restoring blood flow in the entire left and right coronary arteries. The patients did not need to undergo open heart surgery with many risks of complications related to surgery.
During his working day at Thu Duc Regional General Hospital, Professor Cheng gave an in-depth lecture on the role and effectiveness of intravascular ultrasound in intervening in complex coronary artery lesions, especially chronic complete vascular occlusion lesions.
Thu Duc Regional General Hospital is located at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City. The hospital has been performing cardiovascular interventions for 4 years and has performed nearly 1,000 stent placement interventions. Currently, the hospital performs an average of 40-50 cardiovascular interventions per month, providing 24/7 emergency treatment for acute myocardial infarction.
It is known that Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung is one of seven hospitals in the Chang Gung Hospital system - the largest private non-profit hospital system in Taiwan today. Professor Cheng is the author of many scientific research works in the field of cardiovascular disease and he is also a member of the editorial board of many cardiovascular journals in Asia and the world.
