Dien Bien is a mountainous border province in the Northwest region of the country, with a natural area of 953,992.6 hectares. It has geographical coordinates of 20o54' - 22o33' North latitude and 102o10' - 103o36' East longitude. Located 504 km west of Hanoi , it borders Son La province to the east and northeast, Lai Chau province to the north, Yunnan province (China) to the northwest, and Lao PDR to the west and southwest.

It is the only province that shares a border with two countries, Laos and China, of more than 455 km, of which: The border with Laos is 414.712 km; with China is 40.86 km; there are roads to the provinces of Northern Laos and Yunnan province of China, and there are air routes from Dien Bien Phu to Hanoi, Hai Phong city and Ho Chi Minh City.
With 19 ethnic groups, Dien Bien is a convergence of the following ethnic groups: Thai; Mong; Kinh; Dao; Kho Mu; Ha Nhi; Lao; Hoa (Han); Khang; Muong; Cong; Xi Mun; Si La; Nung; Phu La; Tho; Tay; San Chay and other ethnic groups). Each ethnic group has its own characteristics in terms of language, customs, culture... creating a colorful picture for Dien Bien culture.
The average population of Dien Bien province in 2021 is 625,089 people, an increase of 1.89% compared to 2020 (11,609 people); of which: urban population is 94,997 people, accounting for 15.20%; rural population is 530,092 people, accounting for 84.80%; male population is 317,355 people, accounting for 50.77%; female population is 307,734 people, accounting for 49.23%. The average life expectancy of Dien Bien province's population in 2021 is 68.44 years old (male is 65.56 years old, female is 71.50 years old).
