TPO - In Duc Hoa district, Long An province, sedge has become a year-round crop for local people. Sedge does not require much care but brings in hundreds of millions of dong in income each year for local people.

For over 30 years, on the green fields stretching across the roads of Tram Lac hamlet, My Hanh Bac commune, Duc Hoa district, there are sedge fields that bring a large source of income to the people here.

Growing in saline, alum-contaminated wetlands, sedge belongs to the sedge family, has a vertical stem of about one meter, and blooms all year round. Sedge is harvested by Long An people to make handicraft products, such as: weaving cushions, making hats, packaging, thatching houses...

In recent years, people growing sedge have been excited because the price that traders buy is relatively high. Each year, people earn hundreds of millions of dong in profit.

The Banyan tree is an easy-to-grow tree that does not require much care, just weeding, fertilizing, and keeping the water level in the fields at the foot of the tree stable. After 5 months of planting, people start harvesting. After that, farmers often keep the Banyan tree roots and continue to care for them for about 3 months before they can continue to sell them to traders.

Normally, sedge is from 1.3m to 1.8m high and is divided into 2 types with current purchase price ranging from 15 to 20 thousand VND/bundle depending on the type, each bundle has a diameter of about 20 cm.

After harvesting, there is usually no need to replant but to fertilize the new crop immediately. From the old cuttings, the sedge plant continues to grow and develop. However, after 5-7 years of planting, the sedge plant grower will replace the new variety to ensure the plant grows well and produces high yields.

Mr. Ngo Van Dam (My Hanh Bac commune, Duc Hoa district) said: "This profession was passed down to me from my grandfather and father. I have grown it so much that I am used to it and it is hard to give it up, even though there are many factories and enterprises here now. This crop, I planted nearly 6 hectares and started harvesting from April until now."

The sedge plant not only provides high income but also does not require much care, so it has become the main crop of the people here.

Sedge is quite easy to grow because this type of grass can withstand alum, requires little care, and is not affected by pests, so it is quite popular with farmers.

With the current on-site purchase price, after deducting expenses, people growing sedge in My Hanh Bac commune earn a profit of over 100 million VND/ha every year.

Planting sedge helps many families improve their lives and make their homes more spacious. In addition, sedge is not only sold to traders, but people also use it to weave mattresses and bags to sell at wholesale markets, etc. to increase income for local idle workers. Sedge also helps people maintain the traditional mattress weaving profession, thereby contributing to stabilizing life and developing family economy .
