Many new high-yield rice varieties

These days, 23 households in Tho Loc 1 residential area (An Nhon Nam ward) are busy harvesting their TBR85 rice variety through a collaborative production model, celebrating a bountiful harvest.

Mr. Pham Van Tan, Chairman and Director of Nhon Tho Agricultural Cooperative II, said that this winter-spring season, the cooperative collaborated with ThaiBinh Seed Co., Ltd. - Central and Western Highlands region to cultivate 3.6 hectares. As a result, the yield reached 95 quintals/hectare of fresh rice (approximately 85 quintals/hectare of dry rice), which is 4-6 quintals/hectare higher than common varieties.

Not only does it yield high productivity, the TBR85 rice variety is also considered by farmers to be "easy to cultivate and low-cost." Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc (Hamlet 4, Tho Loc 1 residential area), who directly cultivates 6 sao (500 /sao), shared that this variety has strong stems, uniform flowering, and is resistant to pests and diseases. He only sprayed pesticides twice throughout the season, yet the field remained disease-free, yielding nearly 500 kg of dry rice per sao.

According to Mr. Pham Van Tan, the cooperative previously produced the TBR36 variety, but this variety had the drawback of being prone to lodging when it rained at the end of the season. Through trials, the TBR85 variety adapted well to local conditions and grew vigorously. The cooperative will continue to produce it in the summer-autumn season for further evaluation before proposing its inclusion in the official crop structure.

Mr. Bach Nhon Tan - Deputy Head of the Economic , Infrastructure and Urban Planning Department of An Nhon Nam Ward - assessed: The TBR85 variety has many advantages such as strong stems, disease resistance, high yield and suitability to market demand, but further expansion of production is needed for a comprehensive evaluation.

The model is also notable for its close links between cooperatives and businesses. Farmers receive technical training, are supplied with seeds on deferred payment terms, and have their products purchased at prices 20-30% higher than the market price. Fresh rice is purchased directly from the fields at 6,700 VND/kg, reducing drying and transportation costs.

Besides TBR85, the cooperative currently collaborates in the production of 95 hectares with TBR97 and TBR-1 varieties, attracting more than 500 households to participate, with a yield of 80-85 quintals/hectare of dry rice.

Representing the business, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Huong - Deputy Director of Production at ThaiBinh Seed Co., Ltd. - Central and Central Highlands Region - noted: TBR85 is a variety with a short growing season, strong stems, good resistance to pests and diseases, and is suitable for both the Winter-Spring and Summer-Autumn seasons.

The company aims to improve efficiency for farmers through stable purchase prices, technical support, and reduced seed usage, thus saving production costs. In terms of quality, TBR85 rice has a whiteness rate of 72-74%, a whole grain rate of 78-83%, and slender grains, making it suitable for processing and contributing to increased product value.

In Tuy Phuoc Dong commune, the model of collaborative production of ADI 168 rice variety between Phuoc Son Agricultural Cooperative 1 and ADI Company has also yielded positive results.

Mr. Ho Ngoc Dung, Director of the Cooperative, stated: “This year's Winter-Spring crop, despite the fluctuating weather, the rice plants developed well. The yield of the general rice crop reached approximately 80 quintals/hectare, while the ADI 168 variety reached about 84 quintals/hectare, 4 quintals higher. Pests and diseases were negligible, with only scattered planthoppers, but they did not have a major impact.”

This 35-hectare cooperative model significantly reduces labor costs for farmers by purchasing fresh rice directly from the fields, while also ensuring stable prices. "Even with rising input costs, the company maintains its policy of purchasing at market prices plus a 2-3% profit margin. Farmers feel very secure in their production," Mr. Dung said.

Aiming for bumper harvests with good prices.

Recently, several promising new rice varieties, such as PY 2, ĐBR 79, DT 18, VNR98, HG 12..., have been introduced into production; initially, they have shown good yields and are well-adapted to local soil and climate conditions in the 2025-2026 Winter-Spring crop season.

According to the Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment), for the 2025-2026 Winter-Spring crop season, the entire province currently has 25 models of linked rice seed production along the value chain, covering an area of 906 hectares and attracting 3,432 participating households in 8 communes and wards. The average yield reached 76.8 quintals/hectare, with a total production of nearly 7,000 tons.

Commenting on this trend, Mr. Kieu Van Cang - Deputy Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection - stated: "Introducing new rice varieties into production is the right direction, helping to improve productivity, quality, and adaptability to climate change."

More importantly, the linkage model between farmers, cooperatives, and businesses has formed a sustainable value chain, reduced market risks, and increased income for the people.

In the future, it is necessary to continue replicating effective models and selecting suitable varieties for each ecological region to maximize the efficiency of rice production.”

It can be seen that, from the interconnected fields using new rice varieties such as TBR85, TBR97, ADI 168, PY 2… new prospects are opening up for rice production in Gia Lai.

Farmers are not only aiming for a "good harvest," but also for "good prices," gradually improving the efficiency of rice production in the province amidst challenging production conditions.
