Household economy is improving
Before dawn, when many people were still sleeping, Mr. Danh Canh (42 years old), Cha Rao hamlet, Giong Rieng commune, went to the straw mushroom garden. The flashlight beam swept over the mushroom mounds covered in morning dew, each white mushroom sprout emerged from the layer of wet straw. For him, this is not only a way to make a living but also a new direction to help many local households get rich on their homeland.
Coming from a farming family, having been attached to rice fields and vegetables but with unstable income, Mr. Canh boldly tried growing straw mushrooms since 2014. The Commune Farmers' Association mobilized to change the crop structure, supported a preferential loan of 100 million VND from the Social Policy Bank, he expanded the area to 2,000m2. Currently, each mushroom crop lasts about 2 months, the output is more than 30 kg/day, the price is 70,000 - 75,000 VND/kg, the income is nearly 30 million VND/crop. Growing 4 mushroom crops a year, he also has income from rice, agricultural services, ornamental flowers, raising the total income to more than 300 million VND/year. “Previously, my biggest concern was the erratic weather. Now, thanks to the guidance of agricultural officers, I have invested in a greenhouse, controlled the temperature and humidity, and productivity has increased significantly. Growing straw mushrooms helps me increase my income and create jobs for workers in the village,” said Mr. Canh.
From Mr. Canh's straw mushroom growing model, many households in Giong Rieng learned, taking advantage of mixed gardens and ineffective rice fields to grow short-term crops and fruit trees. Mrs. Ha Thi Loan and her husband, residing in Hong Hanh hamlet, after receiving support from the locality, converted 2 hectares of land around their house to grow bitter melon, cucumber, watermelon, guava... earning about 300,000 VND per day, an average of 9 million VND per month. "Before, when the children were young and the family was poor, we planted one type of crop after another to pay for their education. Now that the children have stable jobs, I am very excited," Mrs. Loan shared.
Mr. Huynh Huu Thong - Party Cell Secretary, Head of Hong Hanh Hamlet said: "Currently, the hamlet has only 9 near-poor households. We mobilized to renovate mixed gardens, rotate vegetables, and take advantage of being close to the market to sell products, thanks to which people's lives have improved and their incomes are more stable than before."
