Respecting, promoting and spreading good values and pushing back bad customs and backwardness will contribute to forming and nurturing cultural spaces and environments for people.

Preserving identity

The activity to preserve the long-standing cultural identity of the Red Dao ethnic group in Na Roong hamlet, Nguyen Binh commune (Cao Bang) is a typical example of building a healthy cultural environment for the community. For a long time, the model of the Red Dao Cultural Identity Preservation and Promotion Club in this small hamlet has fostered and maintained pride in traditional identity in all generations of people, from young children to middle-aged and elderly people. For the people here, the traditional colors preserved in costumes, voices, writings, dances and songs are an irreplaceable pride.

The club model was founded from the idea of young people, with the desire to preserve the traditional cultural values of the Red Dao ethnic group. After its establishment, the club attracted the participation of many people in the village, especially families with many generations who responded with unanimous support.

Seeing the traditional cultural values of the Red Dao people gradually being forgotten, embroidery frames, folk songs, languages, costumes, festivals..., all seem to be at risk of disappearing, this reality has urged those who are passionate about their ancestors' heritage to be determined to do something for the community.

The Club for Preservation and Promotion of the Cultural Identity of the Red Dao People in Na Roong Hamlet is not only a place that attracts people to participate in activities, but is also a foundation to preserve and protect the unique cultural heritage values of the Red Dao people here.

The elders teach their children and grandchildren to learn embroidery to preserve the traditional costumes worn during festivals, Tet and important days of life. Pao Dung dances and songs are performed in the middle of green fields, becoming the pride of the village. In particular, the maintenance and transmission of the Red Dao language is focused on, overcoming the risk of extinction.

Cherishing traditional values, for the Red Dao ethnic community in Na Roong hamlet, is to preserve, conserve, spread and fuel the flame of love and enthusiasm for each child of the mountains and forests here. The young generation - children of the mountains and forests with the desire to nurture traditions and enrich the homeland also has many initiatives to promote values, spread and introduce the beauty of identity to a large number of domestic and foreign tourists.

Respect and behave according to community culture

In the story of preserving and promoting the identity values of local people, there is a problem being raised: how to harmonize the goal of tourism development with the preservation of traditional culture, the core factor in the cultural environment of the people.

The phenomenon of many tourists not understanding local cultures and behaving inappropriately towards traditional values in many places, especially with specific identity values, has more or less affected and caused resentment in the community.

For example, the story of foreign tourists dancing and playing in traditional costumes of Mong ethnic women in Tuyen Quang province recently. From the perspective of indigenous culture, this is a deviant behavior, harming the community and going against the direction of civilized and sustainable tourism development that localities are pursuing.

The issue of responsible tourism, not being allowed to be arbitrary in dealing with local culture, continues to be raised. This is also a factor to preserve cultural traditions, protect the living environment, cultural values, and human values in each community.

In the context of cultural tourism development becoming a trend, creating interesting and unique experiences for tourists is a magnet that attracts each land. But that does not mean opening the door to ignorant and disrespectful behavior towards community culture.

Prof. Dr. Tu Thi Loan, former Director of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts, said that for Mong women, the traditional dress is also a sign of national identity, a pride in their origins. This is also a cultural sign to promote the beauty and identity of ethnic groups to domestic and international tourists. Therefore, tourists need to learn about and respect the indigenous culture of each land before experiencing and exploring.

Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son, full-time member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Society, affirmed that culture is a valuable "soft resource", a difference that helps each locality position itself on the tourism map. Therefore, attracting tourists from culture is a correct and potential direction. Coming to the Northern highlands, tourists will have interesting experiences with the culture and customs of the Mong, Muong, Dao, Tay, Thai ethnic groups... Each ethnic group possesses a unique and profound heritage treasure. Each slice can tell long stories full of sediment.

However, if because of that attraction, tourists are allowed to freely experience without clear rules of conduct, without limits and standards, the consequences are very easy to lead to deviation, disgust and distortion, and can even crudely commercialize the values that are very sacred. If not corrected in time, it will hurt the local community, distort the image of Vietnamese culture in the eyes of international tourists, and most importantly, cause the younger generation to misunderstand and distance themselves from their roots.

Before the merger, Ha Giang province (old) issued a Code of Conduct for Civilized Tourism Activities. Currently, Tuyen Quang province continues to inherit and implement this content in the direction of promoting propaganda, raising awareness for the community and tourists, ensuring civilized behavior, and respecting the cultural identity of ethnic groups.

Agreeing on the need for a code of civilized conduct in cultural tourism activities in localities, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Son also noted that, in addition to warnings, there should be sanctions and clear commitments. Violations will be strictly handled. Localities also need to proactively preserve their own identity, not trading off the originality of culture for immediate economic benefits. Indigenous people must be placed at the center of protecting and promoting cultural values, instead of becoming the "backdrop" for performance tourism products.

The S-shaped strip of land with its treasure trove of hidden cultural values is a rich and unique journey of experience for tourists. Understanding the community's desire to introduce and promote those values, tourists will immerse themselves in the life of each land to have original and culturally profound experiences. This is also a factor that contributes to enriching each land and enriching the cultural life of the community.
