Help doctors and patients save time and money on medical examination and treatment

On September 21, in Hanoi, Thanh Oai General Hospital (Hanoi Department of Health) held a consultation conference on the use and storage of electronic medical records.

At the conference, the Hospital announced the decision to establish a Professional Advisory Council to evaluate the use of electronic medical records instead of paper medical records, image storage and transmission, and test information storage... The Council is responsible for evaluating the necessary conditions for implementing electronic medical records at the hospital. At the same time, it advises hospital leaders on the use of electronic records to completely replace paper records.

After being established, the Council conducted a field inspection, evaluated the electronic medical records with all required contents; testing software (LIS), diagnostic imaging (RIS-PACS) to ensure two-way data connection; infrastructure and equipment for digital signature implementation... Based on the inspection results and referring to regulations, the Council voted and agreed that Thanh Oai General Hospital was qualified to implement electronic medical records to replace paper medical records.

According to the Director of Thanh Oai General Hospital, MD, PhD Bach Ngoc Hoang: Thanh Oai General Hospital has a planned scale of 220 beds, but the actual number of beds is 241. On average, the hospital receives 420 patients per day. Notably, in recent times, the hospital's Board of Directors has always determined that preparing conditions to deploy electronic medical records, especially towards a paperless hospital, a smart hospital is one of the important immediate and long-term goals of the unit.

In addition, the hospital also actively applies information technology to professional activities; promotes administrative procedure reform to reduce waiting time and improve the quality of service for patients in the area.

BSCK II Bach Ngoc Hoang emphasized: "The implementation of electronic medical records at Thanh Oai General Hospital is an important step in the process of digital transformation of healthcare at the unit.

In particular, the implementation of electronic medical records to completely replace paper medical records will contribute to reducing procedures, improving the quality of medical data, ensuring data security and creating a solid foundation for connecting and sharing data with the national health system, serving the work of taking care of people's health in an effective, continuous and specific manner. Thereby, actively contributing to administrative reform, saving costs, minimizing professional errors and creating favorable conditions for statistics, scientific research, connecting and interconnecting medical data across the industry.

Speaking at the Conference, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quy Tuong, Chairman of the Vietnam Medical Informatics Association, said: The implementation of electronic medical records is a success in medical examination and treatment. Patient information is stored and managed on software, helping doctors and patients easily look up and review medical examination history anywhere thanks to devices connected to the Internet. Providing accurate diagnosis and treatment methods, avoiding unnecessary tests for patients as well as avoiding unnecessary medical mistakes, especially helping doctors and patients save time and costs for medical examination and treatment.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Quy Tuong also suggested that the hospital should continue to perfect the regulations and rules more fully and in detail, continue to upgrade and supplement software in the process of implementing electronic medical records; strengthen training and improve the capacity of staff in applying electronic medical records in medical examination and treatment activities... This will be an important foundation to move towards building a smart hospital model in the future.
