Alphabet, Google's parent company, said multiple senior executives at various companies are being targeted by an email extortion campaign in which hackers claim to have stolen sensitive data from Oracle business applications.
In a statement, the online search giant said that a group of hackers claiming to be linked to the Cl0p hacker organization claimed to have infiltrated Oracle E-Business Suite. The extortion emails were described as “large in volume.” However, Google declined to share further details about the scale and extent of the impact, emphasizing that there is currently not enough evidence to verify the hackers’ claims.
In addition, Oracle has not yet commented on this information.
According to Reuters , Cl0p is a hacker group that has carried out many large-scale attacks, exploiting security vulnerabilities to steal data and blackmail businesses. In an email response, Cl0p said the group "is not ready to discuss details at this time."
Cybersecurity expert Cynthia Kaiser, head of the Ransomware Research Center at Halcyon, said recent hacker demands range from millions of dollars to tens of millions of dollars, with the highest being as high as $50 million .
Kaiser said there was some debate about the extent of the connection between the group behind the email campaign and Cl0p. However, she noted that there were early signs that the perpetrators were likely linked to the group. “There’s a lot of overlap between groups, and there are a lot of copycats throughout the ecosystem,” Kaiser said.
In the context of increasing cyber attacks, experts recommend that businesses need to strengthen their security systems and prepare a response plan in case of being blackmailed by hackers. Google said it will continue to monitor and update when there is more authentic information related to this campaign.
