"Doctor" of lychee tree
Coming to the early litchi growing area of Phuc Hoa, we had a special impression of Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung. Born in the village of Phuc Hoa, attached to farming work since childhood, dreaming of contributing to building large, safe and quality production fields in her hometown, after graduating from high school, she took the entrance exam to the University of Agriculture I, studying the Faculty of Agricultural Technical Education.

After graduating from university in 2005, Ms. Nhung worked as an agricultural extension worker in several units of Tan Yen district. At the end of 2016, she was transferred to Phuc Hoa commune. Over the past twenty years, she has always been dedicated and enthusiastic about her job; proactively learning, participating in training courses to improve her qualifications, accumulating more knowledge and experience. Regardless of the weather, rain or shine, early or late, whenever people need advice or technical support, she is there.
Phuc Hoa is a key commune for growing early lychees, from April to early June every year is the peak season for care and harvesting. During this time, Ms. Nhung often visits lychee gardens to check the crop situation, instructs farmers on cultivation, and applies techniques to produce better quality products. At the same time, she also cares about connecting and bringing businesses to visit and purchase agricultural products for farmers. With large orders, she does not mind the difficulties, even going to the garden many nights to instruct households on how to harvest and preserve lychees to meet customers' requirements. In the morning, she is still present at the agency headquarters to work normally.
Remember the 2023 lychee crop, lychees of some households had an unusual phenomenon of early ripening, the skin was red but the flesh was dry and had little water. At first, only a few trees had strange signs, but after one night, it quickly spread to the whole garden and many other gardens. Thousands of lychee trees nearing harvest time were at risk of crop failure.
After carefully examining each bunch of fruit, Ms. Nhung determined that the above phenomenon was caused by strange bacteria, which was different from common diseases and had no specific treatment. After reporting and asking for advice from the commune leaders, she contacted experts and colleagues to learn more about the treatment experience. The difficulty was that each person had different opinions and predictions about the disease status of the tree, making the treatment more complicated. Finally, with her professional knowledge and many years of experience, Ms. Nhung guided households to kill bacteria on the fruit by mixing according to her calculated ratio.
After spraying the pesticide, she was still worried, only when the households reported that the bacteria on the trees had been completely eliminated, then she breathed a sigh of relief. Thanks to timely treatment, dozens of hectares of lychee grew normally, and when harvested, the yield was higher than expected, and the quality of the lychee was assessed by inspection agencies as safe. To this day, households still remember Ms. Nhung's contributions, considering her the "doctor" of the lychee tree.
Improve fruit quality
Phuc Hoa is blessed by nature with a unique climate, suitable for growing early lychees. Early lychees of Phuc Hoa are not as sweet as those grown in the main season, but have a refreshing taste, thick flesh, and are juicy. However, to become a commodity product that meets export standards, it is necessary to comply with strict production processes and cultivation techniques. Meanwhile, most local people still maintain the habit of caring for lychees based on experience, some households still abuse chemical pesticides, and are reluctant to invest and apply new techniques.
Realizing the export prospects of her hometown’s sweet fruit, Ms. Nhung actively promoted and guided people to apply farming techniques according to the standards of the importing country. Initially, only a few households followed suit, but “slow and steady wins the race”, thanks to her perseverance and the propaganda and guidance of all levels and sectors, people gradually realized the multifaceted benefits of producing high-quality lychees, meeting the strict requirements of demanding markets.
Currently, Phuc Hoa has signed contracts with many businesses and partners to purchase lychees for export to the US, EU and some high-end markets. Phuc Hoa lychees have achieved their current position thanks to the efforts of Party committees and authorities at all levels in leadership and direction; the determination of each household and especially the close supervision and enthusiastic support in tree care techniques to meet export standards of comrade Nguyen Thi Nhung. As a result, in 2021, Phuc Hoa early lychee met the export conditions. Up to now, the commune has built 27 lychee growing area codes for export to many countries, including many high-end markets such as the US, Japan, EU, Thailand, Korea... Many households from small-scale production now have large quantities of goods exported to the US and many European countries such as the families of Mr. and Mrs. Dang Le Thuy, Nguyen Van Thuan, Ngo Van Anh, Ngo Van Cuong, Nguyen Van Hung, Quat Du 2 village; Nguyen Van Ha, Phuc Le village...
Comrade Ngo Van Tiep, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phuc Hoa commune informed: "Phuc Hoa lychee has the position it has today thanks to the efforts of the Party Committee and authorities at all levels in leadership and direction; the determination of each household and especially the close supervision and enthusiastic support in lychee care techniques to soon meet export standards of comrade Nguyen Thi Nhung".
For the people of Phuc Hoa, Ms. Nhung is a professional, dedicated and responsible officer. Lychee growers all trust and apply the techniques she guides. "Thanks to Ms. Nhung's support, the productivity and quality of our lychees are getting better and better, meeting the demands of many markets," said Ms. Duong Thi Minh, from Quat Du 2 village.
The prospects and reputation of Phuc Hoa early lychee are increasingly expanding, affirming the quality of local agricultural products in the domestic and international markets. This year, the area of early lychee in the whole Phuc Hoa commune is estimated at more than 700 hectares, with an output of about 10,000 tons, an increase of about 3,000 tons compared to last year.
The successive lychee seasons have brought an increasingly prosperous life to the people in the commune. For a dedicated and passionate grassroots agricultural extension officer like Ms. Nhung, the greatest joy is to be loved by the people in the commune and trusted by her superiors. It is known that at the end of 2024, because the title of agricultural extension officer is no longer in the organizational structure at the commune level, Ms. Nhung was transferred to work as a civil servant in the Department of Justice - Civil Status.
Although she has changed jobs, in early 2025, Ms. Nhung was still assigned by the leaders of the People's Committee of Phuc Hoa commune to the task of propagating and guiding local people to produce lychee to meet export requirements. Whenever people need support on techniques for caring for lychee or other crops, she is always ready to guide them. "I am very happy to bring my knowledge and experience to serve production, help people in the commune, and contribute to increasing the value and brand of my hometown lychee" - Ms. Nhung expressed.
