Contribute youth efforts in preventing drowning accidents for children

Organizing swimming classes for children during the summer helps prevent drowning accidents.

To equip members and young people with basic knowledge and skills on drowning and injury prevention, "For a safe summer without drowning", the Youth Union at all levels coordinates with relevant local sectors to disseminate the Party's policies, the State's laws and policies, and the directions of the Government and the Prime Minister in the work of protecting, caring for andeducating children. Disseminate summer activities organized by the Youth Union, Association and Pioneer organizations at all levels, especially activities in the Month of Action for Children 2025 with the theme "Prioritizing resources to complete goals for children". Diversify propaganda methods, especially on information channels and social networks of the Youth Union, Association and Pioneer organizations; promote the effectiveness of the commune-level broadcasting system. Focus on promoting propaganda on the Law on Children, legal policies related to children for cadres, union members, team leaders, youth, parents, and child care workers. Strengthen propaganda to raise awareness and skills of children, families, and communities on participating in safe cyberspace; prevent and combat accidents, child injuries, drowning, and traffic accidents; report and denounce acts of child abuse, violence, and exploitation of child labor.

In addition, the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee directed the Youth Union units to coordinate with schools, relevant agencies and families to organize the handover and management of students during the summer in residential areas; guide and organize cultural and recreational activities for children suitable for their age, attracting the participation of a large number of children; coordinate with functional agencies to organize swimming and drowning rescue classes for children during the summer; participate in installing danger signs in ponds, lakes, rivers and activities to improve the environment with potential risks of drowning children in families and communities. Specifically, in 2024, the whole province will organize 352 training courses on drowning prevention, accident prevention, injury prevention, child abuse attracting over 18,000 children to participate; organize 60 free swimming courses for 3,156 children. In the class, students are instructed and practice many basic skills. Students can handle situations and accidents that may occur such as cramps, difficulty breathing...

To implement the work of preventing and combating drowning for children in the province, during the Action Month for Children in 2025, the Youth Union and Young Pioneers at all levels in the province strive to organize 10 propaganda activities on preventing and combating drowning, accidents and injuries, and preventing and combating child abuse; 60 free swimming classes for children; organize at least 1 summer camp and skill camp for children. To date, the province has installed more than 200 warning signs in areas prone to drowning; opened dozens of training classes to improve swimming skills for children in all localities. Along with raising awareness and skills in preventing and combating drowning for children, to contribute to reducing accidents, injuries, and drowning in children, the Youth Union and Young Pioneers at all levels in the province also pay attention to strengthening the organization of activities to educate about historical traditions, culture, ethics, lifestyle, and recreational activities; activities to foster cultural, artistic, physical education, and sports talents; Experiential activities, improving foreign language skills for children... Investing in organizing experiential programs, summer camps, skills education programs for children such as: "Semester in the army", "Learning to be a police officer"... Actively connecting youth and student volunteer teams in the locality to support children in reviewing lessons, studying, organizing skill training activities, and highly educational playgrounds. Typically, in Hai Hau district, the District Youth Union and the District Youth Union Council have directed 100% of local teams to carry out propaganda activities to a large number of team members on skills to prevent drowning and child injuries; first aid methods when there are drowning victims. In addition, other propaganda activities have also been promoted such as: including the content of preventing drowning and injuries into the content of team and team activities; Building a bookshelf of drowning prevention skills to help students actively read books during recess... Comrade Vu Viet Duong, Secretary of Hai Hau District Youth Union said: "Through propaganda activities to educate students, youth, and adolescents about drowning prevention; at the same time, help them have skills to prevent drowning accidents, and guide them on how to safely handle drowning incidents. This is an annual program organized by the District Youth Union every year". At the Center for Culture, Information and Sports of Nam Dinh city, the Center organized a teaching program on drowning prevention propaganda for students. Here, the students were provided with information and data by the Center's staff on the dangers of drowning accidents; warned about the causes and risks of drowning when swimming in ponds and lakes, and instructed on measures to prevent and handle drowning accidents. Dang Ngoc Minh, a student participating in the swimming course, said: “By participating in the swimming class, I not only receive knowledge, but also receive instructions and practice in using life-saving equipment such as life jackets, buoys; and using sticks or ropes to rescue drowning people right at the propaganda session.”

Preventing and combating drowning in children is an essential activity, especially in the summer. Therefore, it is necessary for agencies, departments, sectors, organizations, authorities at all levels to participate, and each citizen and each family must join hands in managing their children, contributing to the effective implementation of the work of protecting, caring for, and educating children, creating favorable conditions for children to develop comprehensively in terms of personality, intelligence, and health.
