MU will recoup a large sum of money from the Greenwood transfer. |
Mason Greenwood is becoming a top transfer target for AS Roma after his breakout season at Marseille. However, any team wishing to acquire the English forward at this time faces a problem stemming from Manchester United.
According to Italian media, Roma want to bring Greenwood to the Olimpico to build a new attacking line under coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The 24-year-old striker has scored 48 goals and provided 17 assists in 81 appearances for Marseille since leaving Old Trafford in 2024.
However, Marseille are not going to let him go easily. The French club are demanding a fee of around 50 million euros for the player, whose contract runs until 2029.
What complicates the deal even more is that MU still retains a significant percentage of the transfer value in Greenwood's next transfer. This means Marseille will almost certainly be unable to lower the price, as they would have to share a portion of the money with the "Red Devils".
Roma is therefore facing a difficult financial dilemma. The Italian capital club may be forced to sell Manu Kone or Matias Soule to raise enough funds for this transfer.
Marseille's situation is also not very favorable. Finishing only 5th in Ligue 1 meant the port city club missed out on Champions League qualification and suffered significant financial losses. Greenwood therefore became a name that could bring in crucial funds to balance the budget.
Marseille also has little room for negotiation due to the clause in their agreement with MU still being in effect. Meanwhile, Roma understands that securing a place in next season's Champions League could decide the entire deal.
If they beat Hellas Verona in the final round of Serie A, the Giallorossi will secure a Champions League spot, meaning they will have enough revenue to officially enter the race for Greenwood.
