Many seaports in Hai Phong have increased their working capacity by 200% compared to before the storm, to avoid disruption of the goods supply chain.

Hai Phong City is one of two localities directly hit by storm No. 3, causing heavy damage to both people and property. This is also an important hub of international maritime traffic routes, which is always bustling with transportation and import-export activities of goods in the entire Northern region.

Dealing with the damage caused by the storm is not something that can be done overnight, but rather will take time. However, in Hai Phong, all production and business activities have quickly resumed. Many seaports have even increased their operating capacity by 200% compared to before the storm, to avoid disruptions in the supply chain.

Hai Phong Port is ranked in the top 100 largest ports in the world . Tan Vu is the largest container port of Hai Phong Port. But when storm No. 3 made landfall directly here, all port activities had to stop suddenly.

After two days of fighting the storm, all production and business activities here have been resumed by the unit to return to normal . The result of minimizing the storm's destruction is due to a series of measures that the Port applied before the storm, such as proactively lowering the height of the containers from 6 layers to 3 layers. At the same time, it is mandatory to arrange the containers in a closed block shape like a matchbox, to avoid wind blowing into the gaps.

Mr. Le Minh Hai - Director of Tan Vu Port Branch, Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company said: "All goods of shipping lines and customers on the yard are guaranteed absolute safety".

As for Nam Dinh Vu Port in Hai Phong, after storm No. 3, it suffered some relative losses such as: damage to the office area and the container yard. However, the unit still returned to normal operations, even nearly doubling its capacity compared to before the storm.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang - Head of Administration and Management, Nam Dinh Vu Port shared: "The port quickly rented additional equipment and vehicles and was supported by member units in the group in terms of human resources to be able to immediately put into operation at high intensity."

Shippers usually receive import and export orders from the port online, but due to the impact of the storm, the transmission equipment is still being repaired, so the port is dealing with the situation by doing it directly.

Hai Phong City has about 47 seaports, with hundreds of millions of tons of cargo passing through each year. To avoid supply chain disruptions, cargo clearance at ports must be resolved quickly.

Mr. Vu Hong Quang - Head of Maritime Legal Department, Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority commented: "For ships transporting container cargo, if they cannot enter in time, each ship will lose about tens of thousands of USD in a day."

Currently, 100% of the seaports in Hai Phong City have returned to normal operations. In addition to ensuring capacity compensation, management agencies have considered controlling the situation of “following the flow” in increasing freight rates and abnormal cargo handling services. The Vietnam Maritime Administration has issued a document requiring businesses providing cargo transportation services at seaports to declare and list prices according to current regulations.
