The event is part of the Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) program hosted by the Australian Government, bringing together delegates from Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and the host country to share experiences and promote cooperation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector. At the conference, VIMC delivered an important speech, focusing on Vietnam's efforts and orientations in the trend of "greening" the maritime industry.

Promoting cooperation to reduce emissions in maritime transport

As countries accelerate their commitment to sustainable development and carbon neutrality, the Melbourne conference is designed as a regional forum for in-depth cooperation to share knowledge, experience and solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the maritime industry. The conference program takes place from 22 to 28 June 2025 with many in-depth discussions around five main topics: improving policies and standards to support emissions reduction, developing clean port infrastructure and fuels, ensuring safety when using low-carbon fuels, promoting an equitable green transition, and mobilizing sustainable finance for emission reduction projects.

Delegation of Vietnam Maritime Administration and VIMC representatives visited the Port of Melbourne

Delegates from three Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, joined their Australian counterparts in a series of diverse activities, including a survey of the Port of Melbourne and the VICT automated container terminal, a visit to the CSIRO Energy Research Centre, etc. Discussions focused on building green transport corridors, standardizing clean fuels, training human resources for the transition period, as well as digitalization initiatives, equipment electrification and shore power supply to optimize port operations.

Roles and responsibilities of Vietnam National Shipping Lines

As a key enterprise in the Vietnamese maritime industry, VIMC is actively implementing a green transformation strategy to minimize environmental impacts and enhance competitiveness. At the Melbourne conference, VIMC Deputy General Director Nguyen Ngoc Anh represented Vietnam to present a report on the current status and orientation of emission reduction in the industry. He said that Vietnam is strongly committed to realizing the goal of net zero emissions by 2050, in line with the commitment at COP26 and the NDC targets under the Paris Agreement.

To achieve that goal, Vietnam in general and VIMC in particular are proactively seeking innovative solutions to reduce the “carbon footprint” in maritime activities. With many solutions being set as key tasks by Vietnam to support the green transition process, including: Perfecting institutions, policies, planning, using electricity and clean energy, green maritime infrastructure, increasing energy efficiency and reducing emissions, international cooperation, science and technology and human resources, and implementing green ports.

On the part of the Corporation, VIMC focuses on developing the port system according to the "green port - smart port" model, promoting the electrification of loading and unloading equipment and digitalizing seaport management to optimize efficiency and save energy.

VIMC Deputy General Director Nguyen Ngoc Anh presented a speech at the Conference

“Green transformation in the maritime industry is not only an inevitable trend but also an urgent task to ensure sustainable development. VIMC is committed to accompanying the national strategy towards the goal of zero net emissions by 2050, through a series of initiatives to upgrade the fleet and seaports in a green direction,” Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh affirmed at the conference.

The statement of the VIMC representative shows the determination of Vietnamese enterprises in contributing to the realization of the world 's common goal. Mr. Anh also emphasized that the process of "greening" the fleet and seaports requires huge investment resources as well as synchronous coordination of policies and technology on a global scale. Therefore, VIMC promotes international cooperation activities and seeks technical and financial support from development partners to accelerate the emission reduction roadmap.
