To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day and to demonstrate the spirit of journalists "all towards the beloved sea and islands of the Fatherland", from May 23 to 29, the Navy and the Vietnam Journalists Association organized a working delegation to visit the islands and platforms in the Truong Sa archipelago.

A trip of special significance

After solemnly offering incense at the Monument to the heroic soldiers of the Ships Without Numbers at the base of Naval Brigade 125, the delegation departed for beloved Truong Sa.

This trip has a special significance as the delegation includes 100 journalists - leaders of press agencies and reporters from all over the country. Also joining the delegation are officers and soldiers of the Navy, artists... and officers and soldiers of the KN-290 ship.

The delegation was led by Colonel Do Hong Duyen, Deputy Political Commissar of Naval Region 2, and journalist Le Quoc Minh - Member of the Party Central Committee, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper.

Seven consecutive days of sailing over a thousand nautical miles, the journalists in the working group visited the soldiers and people on the islands of Da Thi, Sinh Ton, Co Lin, Len Dao, Da Tay (A), Truong Sa Lon and the DK1/19 platform.

Emotional when visiting submerged islands in Truong Sa

Journalism requires a lot of traveling and meeting many people, but it is difficult to describe all the emotions of journalists when they come to the islands in Truong Sa.

As at the submerged islands of Da Thi, Co Lin and Len Dao, although small, they have a strategic position and play a very important role in detecting and preventing activities of foreign ships violating Vietnam's sovereignty in the waters of the Truong Sa archipelago.

Here, journalists witnessed with their own eyes the life of the people here, although full of hardship and deprivation, is always full of determination to overcome difficulties and optimism.

Previously, like other submerged islands, the biggest difficulty on these islands was the lack of fresh water and no land to grow trees, vegetables, etc. Here, fresh water for daily life was mainly exploited from rainwater. In recent years, the islands have been invested in equipping reservoir systems, so they have proactively ensured 100% of their daily water needs. The islands have wind and solar energy systems, contributing to improving and enhancing living conditions and serving training and work, etc.

At each island, the journalists took the opportunity to discuss and learn more about the life and people on the island. The members of the delegation respectfully took photos and recorded each row of green vegetables, each pot of flowers... They all understood that behind those green shoots, those seemingly small flowers, there were countless hard efforts to care for and cultivate by the soldiers in the sun and wind of the open sea.

Journalists who have been to Truong Sa many times also feel very excited that life here has changed more and more. Soldiers who used to lack everything now have a library, cultural bookcases and a gym to practice and relax after hours of guard duty, ready to fight.

However, what made a big impression on many members of the delegation were the young soldiers on the islands. Many journalists said that when they arrived at each island, they were welcomed and talked to by the soldiers, most of whom were very young, and they were even more moved, admired and trusted a generation of young officers and soldiers who have continued the tradition of protecting every inch of their homeland's sea and islands.

Impressive green color of Truong Sa

Arriving at Sinh Ton Dong island, Da Tay A and especially Truong Sa Lon island, the large frontline islands of Truong Sa archipelago, what surprised many members of the delegation was the green color covering the islands.

These islands are shaded by trees typical of Truong Sa such as the square-fruited banyan tree, the maple tree... and trees brought from the mainland to shade the straight concrete roads, the schools that resound with the sound of children reading, the red-tiled houses of the islanders. In particular, the islands also have a lighthouse system, a fishing logistics service center with a port that can accommodate hundreds of ships, rescue equipment for fishermen in all weather conditions and projects to develop the economy and society of the islands.

During the working trip, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper presented soldiers and people at Truong Sa islands with 1,400 national flags from the "Proud of the National Flag" program and nearly 40 scholarships to support learning, backpacks, and notebooks worth 50 million VND to primary school students on the islands.

Despite the limited time, the working group worked urgently at every point, visited, encouraged, gave gifts; organized cultural exchanges with the military, people and forces on duty on the islands and DK1/19 platform.

In addition, during the journey, a number of meaningful activities were also held: Memorial ceremony for officers and soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the cause of protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands; Ceremony to visit the Martyrs' Monument and Uncle Ho's Memorial House in Truong Sa town; Flag-raising ceremony and review of the troops on Truong Sa island. The members of the delegation also had the opportunity to visit cultural and spiritual works on the islands, organize sports and art competitions...

During this trip, the Vietnam Journalists Association, Nhan Dan Newspaper and units such as Voice of Vietnam, Vietnam News Agency , Vietnam Television Center in Ho Chi Minh City , Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper, Thanh Nien Newspaper, Vnexpress Electronic Newspaper, Vietnamnet Newspaper, The World & Vietnam Newspaper, Agriculture and Environment Newspaper, Capital Women Newspaper, Today's Rural Newspaper, Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank, Vietnam Tobacco Corporation, other press units, Provincial Journalists Associations, and enterprises supported 1.7 billion VND for the Navy to build CQ-01 boats and presented other practical gifts worth nearly 1 billion VND to officers, soldiers, and people on the islands.

Ship KN-290 arrived at DK 1/19 platform at Que Duong shoal in bad weather, rough seas and thunderstorms. However, overcoming strong winds and waves, the working group reached the soldiers on DK 1/19 platform, bringing not only gifts, songs of encouragement to the soldiers, but also the sentiments of journalists who always respect and love the resilient people who stick to the system of platforms stretching from Truong Sa sea to Ca Mau cape, always steadfast in the midst of wind and waves, fighting both storms and thunderstorms to carry out their duties to the country.

The more I understand, the more I love life and people of Truong Sa.

Journalist Le Quoc Minh commented: Beyond the meaning of a normal business trip, the most valuable and historical thing about the journey of more than 100 journalists to the islands and platforms of Truong Sa at the time of the 100th anniversary of the Vietnamese revolutionary press is to give press managers and reporters a realistic and emotional panoramic view of the simple life but always full of the spirit of overcoming difficulties of the soldiers and people in Truong Sa. From there, we understand and love Truong Sa more and more.
