'Let's lull each other on the words of new leaves'

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên03/03/2024

When Trinh Cong Son spoke from the depths of his heart: "The kite flies but the soul is cold. The kite falls, the abyss is sad. Who am I to still hide my tears?", he found sympathy from many people. This sympathy could be me, could be you, could be all of us. And one day, maybe the day of all days, maybe April 1, 2001 - the day the musician left this world, we will remember him with great longing. Remember, because Trinh Cong Son left behind many songs that live on through the years, influencing the perception of contemporaries, even later...

Mr. Le Hung Manh next to the statue of musician Trinh Cong Son at Trinh Cong Son park ( Hue )

From the common sentiment, like everyone else who loved Trinh Cong Son's music , some people thought of a noble thing: to build a statue of him - as a way to express gratitude to him. Gratitude because his music has brought them a different life than they are living. The person who did this is Mr. Le Hung Manh, a businessman currently working in Ho Chi Minh City. When did this idea come to him? Mr. Manh said that since he was young, he sang and believed in Trinh Cong Son's songs. And those lyrics helped him have a different perspective in the turbulent choices before the times before 1975.

In the South, his generation once exclaimed in a plaintive, sad and painful way: "Let me go rebuild the love story. Let me go raise peace . Let me go through the rough terrain. Look at the blood in your heart..." . From these lyrics, this melody, Mr. Le Hung Manh actively devoted himself like many other young people in the Southern urban areas at that time. Later, after many times talking and meeting with the musician he admired, Mr. Manh told himself that he had to do something about musician Trinh Cong Son.

With this intention, he discussed with his brother and friend, sculptor Truong Dinh Que. Fortunately, after hearing Mr. Manh's wish, Mr. Que agreed and approved. It can be said that it was a "fate" because Mr. Que and musician Trinh Cong Son were born in the same year and were friends since their youth. The two had a common understanding in artistic creation and warm and sincere drinking sessions. In 1960, when Mr. Que graduated from Gia Dinh College of Fine Arts, it was also the year musician Trinh Cong Son became famous with his first song "Wet Eyes" . When he learned of Mr. Manh's intention, sculptor Truong Dinh Que not only used his memory from many meetings, observations, and recordings of his close friend's images, but also from sketches, drawings, and photos... to find the most satisfactory way to express the statue of Trinh Cong Son.

BOW DOWN FOR LOVE TO ARISE

To make this statue complete and without "distraction", Mr. Que chose the location that journalist Ha Dinh Nguyen had visited to learn about and reported on the Thanh Nien Newspaper first: the statue carving workshop next to the stream at An Vieng Rubber Farm, in Binh Son Commune, Long Thanh District (Dong Nai). During the process of making this remote place, Mr. Le Hung Manh discussed many times with Mr. Que about how to express the figure of musician Trinh Cong Son.

After many discussions and suggestions, both agreed to choose the pose of the musician sitting, holding a guitar in his hand, with a pensive face, looking down at the open page of a book. The whole spirit of this statue is to express the spirit when musician Trinh Cong Son once contemplated human destiny: "Bending down for love to rise. For soft skin. For the passionate rush. Bending down for life to forget. For the evening sky and clouds. For the night to silently celebrate" . The artist Doan Tan Hue made this statue out of bronze, working at a bronze foundry in Thuan An (Binh Duong). And when making the pedestal for this statue, Mr. Manh also agreed with the idea of architect Ho Viet Vinh choosing the image of an eye (length: 6.5 m, width 3.5 m, height 0.55 m). The reason for this is because musician Trinh Cong Son had used the image of an eye many times in his lyrics.

Thus, with a sitting position, height of 1.7 m, width of 1.6 m, length of 2.3 m, fans when taking souvenir photos will be more friendly and closer to the artist who once exclaimed: "Who am I, who am I, who am I? But I love this life so much". Indeed, on the afternoon of February 28, 2024, on the occasion of the official inauguration of the statue at Trinh Cong Son Park in Gia Hoi Ward (Hue City), many people expressed their interest and approval of the above idea.

Receiving the bronze statue of Trinh Cong Son donated by Mr. Le Hung Manh to Hue City, Mr. Truong Dinh Hanh, Vice Chairman of Hue City People's Committee, affirmed that after this work, the authorities at all levels will continue to make efforts to renovate Trinh Cong Son Park and this place will become one of the tourist attractions for everyone when coming to Hue. This idea has been supported by the people, because Trinh Cong Son's songs have contributed to reflecting the gentle, poetic, and profound beauty of a land of the capital, such as: "The afternoon has entered your garden. Autumn has passed through your hands many times. The trees light candles in two rows. Let the sunlight enter your eyes". And when we come to admire Trinh Cong Son's statue, it may also be the time we share his feelings during his lifetime: "Which road led me to drunkenness. Once I dreamed that I had passed away. Even though it was real, tears fell and I was not very sad. Suddenly I woke up, oh, the sun has risen"...

Strangely, when we arrived in Hue to celebrate the inauguration of Trinh Cong Son's statue, the sky was gloomy and tearful. It was raining heavily. The wind was cold. But on the afternoon of February 28, 2024 - which was also his 85th birthday - everyone was happy and joyful, shouting: "Oh, the sun is shining". If there was some kind of "enlightenment" between musician Trinh Cong Son and us, then this is also a manifestation, right? It is known that after this unique event, businessman Le Hung Manh is currently continuing his efforts to erect a statue of Bui Giang in Quang Nam or Da Nang. The statue of the "middle-aged poet" Bui Giang was also made by sculptor Truong Dinh Que.

In general, talented artists once dedicated to this life - the next generation still remembers them, nothing is lost and nothing is forgotten if we think of the best for the community. As musician Trinh Cong Son said, it is also the time to sympathize with the message of gratitude and love for humanity: "Let's lull each other on the new wind's words. Let's love each other so that the bricks and stones have good news. Let's call each other's names on the cliffs and the beaches. Even if tomorrow this place is far away from each other..." .
