Amorim brings something new to Man Utd
Ruben Amorim is expected to stick with the familiar 3-4-2-1 formation from his time at Sporting Lisbon when United travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town. One of the notable highlights is that Amad Diallo is likely to be tested in the right wing-back role.

According to pundit Adrian Clarke, Amorim aims to press high to exploit Ipswich's lack of pace in defence - a weakness that has seen them punished by Man City, Southampton, and Aston Villa in previous rounds.
Mason Mount: A chance to shine
Mason Mount, a $76 million signing, could benefit from a full week of training under Amorim, while the rest of his teammates are away on international duty. Mount’s superior pressing ability, averaging 45.6 pressures per minute this season, better than Joshua Zirkzee’s 38.3, is a big advantage.
Mount’s style of play also fits Amorim’s demands: attacking players must press aggressively without the ball, and this could be an opportunity for the 25-year-old midfielder to regain an important position in the squad.
Offensive line and the role of speed
Ipswich's sluggish defence was an ideal target for Man Utd's runners. With the pace of Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and Marcus Rashford, Amorim could employ a direct attacking strategy, exploiting the spaces behind the opposition defence.
Notably, Bruno Fernandes will take on a more flexible role, able to drop deep or join the attack from positions behind the striker. Under Amorim, it is understandable that players like Garnacho or Diallo are given opportunities, as he always prioritizes breakthroughs from young talents.
Expected lineup and future under Amorim
Ruben Amorim is unlikely to make any major changes in his debut. The 3-4-2-1 formation is likely to remain the same, with Fernandes and Hojlund supporting from the back. Diogo Dalot could be moved into the right-sided centre-back role, alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.
Long term, Amorim will look for more tactical variety, with the possibility of using a 3-4-3 formation and experimenting with Marcus Rashford as a centre-forward. Players like Bruno Fernandes or Mount could also be asked to join the attack more often from midfield.
“Amorim brings an exciting new dimension to United,” said Clarke. “The clash with Ipswich will provide the first clues to a new era at Old Trafford.”
