The effectiveness of the technical process of restoring guava trees that died in large numbers without clear cause

Engineer Nguyen Van Dom (left) and gardeners check and evaluate the recovery of diseased guava trees after implementing the technical process deployed by the Center.

Gardener Cao Van Lung, Hoa An hamlet, An Phu Tan commune, Cau Ke district said: his family has more than 01 hectare of Taiwanese guava growing area, yielding over 50 tons of fruit each year. In early 2023, the entire guava area showed signs of gradual death and through consultation with agricultural engineers, it was found that the guava was infected with root parasitic nematodes. Currently, the entire guava garden area has been infected and has been cut down, causing great damage to the family...

According to statistics from the Cau Ke District Gardening Association, by early 2024, the entire district will have over 700 hectares of guava growing area; concentrated in the communes: An Phu Tan nearly 250 hectares; Tam Ngai nearly 280 hectares; Ninh Thoi over 100 hectares... The average output is 40 - 45 tons/ha/year and the current guava price fluctuates between 5,000 - 6,500 VND/kg.

Agricultural Engineer Nguyen Van Dom, Head of the Technical Team of the Cau Ke District Agricultural Service Technical Center, shared: In the face of the situation of guava trees dying in large numbers, many gardeners have dealt with and combined with disease prevention and treatment methods but they were not effective. Recently, the Center has implemented a pilot model of disease prevention and treatment for guava trees; the initial results have been successful, the rate of guava trees with severe disease (over 40%) with the ability to recover after treatment reached 70%; the rate of diseased trees under 24%, the ability to recover reached 100%... Engineer Nguyen Van Dom added that the Center has invested its own funds to implement an experimental model of disease prevention and treatment processes for guava trees.

Gardener Nguyen Van Loi, Hoi An hamlet, Hoa Tan commune, Cau Ke district said: his family has 126 guava trees of the Queen variety, which have been yielding fruit for 2 years; from the 3rd year, the guava started to get sick and had dry branches, then spread to the whole tree, the roots had lumps and gradually rotted. At the end of March 2024, the Cau Ke District Agricultural Service Technical Center deployed a technical process for caring for and preventing diseases on guava trees, directly implemented by Engineer Nguyen Van Dom in the family's garden. Up to now, the process has ended and the guava garden has recovered, developed well again, and started to produce new shoots, flowers and fruits. The overall recovery rate of the guava garden is over 70%.

The immediate technical process is built with 6 steps: (1) treatment of lime powder spreading at the base of guava and all over the guava planting bed; (2) treatment of nematode and fungicide at the base; (3) liquid organic treatment (Mixer); (4) treatment of growth regulator, spreading at the base; (5) spraying nutrients through the leaves to pull green shoots + insecticide; (6) after the tree recovers, add some organic fertilizers and growth stimulants.

Also according to Engineer Nguyen Van Dom, in the coming time, if supported by the District People's Committee and the agricultural sector, the Center will continue to expand the scale of the area and production area to implement the above process and organize seminars and assessments from the higher management sector.
