Effectiveness of model garden in Tan Thanh

Việt NamViệt Nam05/03/2024

For the border commune of Tan Thanh, Huong Hoa district, the strength of agricultural economy is not equal to that of trade and services. However, in recent years, some farmers in this locality have actively researched and applied scientific and technical advances to successfully build economic models such as crop cultivation and livestock raising, bringing quite high efficiency. The comprehensive farm economic model from the hill garden of Mr. Dang Ho Tin, Head of the Farmers' Association of An Tiem village, is one of the typical examples that local farmers learn and follow.

On a total garden area of 15,000 m2, Mr. Tin's family used to grow bananas and mangoes, but the productivity and quality were getting lower and lower, so they were abandoned.

Thinking of how to exploit the land potential and get rich on his homeland, Mr. Tin has devoted himself to researching the techniques of cultivating fruit trees and medicinal plants, using custard apple and ginseng as the main crops. These are two fairly new crops, and up to now, there has been no mass planting model in the district.

After a period of research and learning from the effective models of his predecessors, in 2020, Mr. Tin started to renovate the long-abandoned hill garden, borrowing 40 million VND from the credit capital of the Commune Farmers' Association to pilot the cultivation of more than 500 custard apple trees and more than 500 ginseng trees.

In addition, he also intercrops some other fruit trees such as guava and papaya. With the advantage of a large hill garden, abundant underground water, and not far from the Se Pon River, ensuring water sources for cultivation and livestock, Mr. Tin has planned appropriately to build a comprehensive farm in the direction of many trees and many animals.

In addition to the main crops mentioned above, he also grows bananas; digs 4 ponds to raise fish such as grass carp, tilapia, common carp, catfish, and bighead carp; builds tall, windproof barns to raise cows, goats, chickens, and pigs.

After nearly 4 years of implementation, Mr. Tin’s family’s economic model has brought about very positive initial results. All types of crops and livestock are suitable for the soil and climate conditions here. Thanks to careful investment and technical care, they have developed very favorably, without pests or diseases.

In particular, the farm does not use any chemicals or fertilizers, only utilizes manure and exploits available underground water to fertilize and water the plants, so the products ensure food hygiene and safety, and are favored by customers.

In particular, most of the custard apples after harvest are sold in the garden at a stable price of 50-60 thousand VND/kg. Other fruit trees such as guava, mango, and banana also have stable output, mainly consumed locally.

With ginseng harvested all year round at a price of 65-70 thousand VND/kg dry. The fish grow very well, the main food source is natural grass on the farm so the cost is low, each year the average harvest is over 4 tons of various types of fish.

The herd of livestock is growing well with over 20 goats. The goats are raised for meat and breeding, providing both income and ensuring a source of breeding stock for herd multiplication. Built on the principle of diversifying crops and livestock, the farm brings in year-round income. On average, the farm's total income is nearly 200 million VND per year.

Mr. Tin said: “Through the pilot implementation, I found that these new crops are suitable for the weather and soil quality, so they grow well, give better results, and ensure that my family has income from the farm every day.

In the coming time, our family will continue to improve the hilly land to expand the farm, multiply fruit trees with high economic value such as custard apple, jackfruit, Thai mango and build more barns to raise cows and goats.

From the effectiveness of his family's economic model, Mr. Tin actively propagated, mobilized, and shared experiences with farmer members in the village to respond to the policy of converting ineffective crops and livestock to new crops and livestock that are suitable and favored by the market; applying scientific and technical advances to cultivate and raise livestock for higher productivity and quality. Following his example, many farmer members in the commune boldly invested in production, creating stable income for their families.

Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tan Thanh Commune, Le Ba Lam, said: "As the Head of the Farmers' Association of An Tiem Village, Mr. Dang Ho Tin is always a pioneer in everything, especially economic development, striving to become rich legitimately. His model was chosen by the Farmers' Association of the Commune as a model for other members to learn and replicate, and was chosen by the Commune People's Committee to build a model garden for a new rural model village in 2024. With his creative efforts in production, Mr. Tin was voted as a typical farmer in the commune for many consecutive years."
