AP reported that clashes between Syrian government forces and Kurdish fighters in a disputed area of Aleppo, northern Syria, escalated on January 8. The Aleppo provincial authorities opened evacuation corridors, and tens of thousands of people left their homes carrying their belongings.

The state news agency SANA, citing military sources, reported that Syrian forces would begin "targeted operations" against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the Sheikh Maqsoud, Achrafieh, and Bani Zaid neighborhoods half an hour after the 1 p.m. deadline for evacuation.
An AP reporter on the scene heard scattered shelling as residents rushed to leave the area on the morning of January 8.
"More than 142,000 people have been evacuated across Aleppo province. Many of them have serious health problems, including the elderly, women, and children," the source said.
Kurdish forces said at least 12 civilians were killed in predominantly Kurdish areas, while government officials reported at least nine civilians killed in government-controlled areas as fighting broke out on January 6. Dozens more on both sides were injured.

Clashes escalated in the afternoon, with continuous shelling and drone attacks. Tanks were seen moving into disputed neighborhoods.
The clashes occurred amidst a deadlock in political negotiations between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces.
The Damascus government under interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa signed an agreement in March with the SDF, the force controlling much of the northeast, to merge it with the Syrian army by the end of 2025. However, disagreements remain on how to implement the agreement.
