Coach Dick Advocaat is expected to return to the Curacao national team. |
According to ESPN , the Curacao Football Federation has reached an agreement to bring back veteran strategist Dick Advocaat to lead the national team. This is seen as a move to stabilize the team's morale amidst internal instability.
Previously, Advocaat resigned as coach in February, citing his desire to focus on his daughter's health. His replacement was Fred Rutten, the former coach of PSV, FC Twente, and Feyenoord Rotterdam. However, Rutten's tenure was short-lived, as Curacao suffered consecutive defeats in two friendly matches in March against Australia and China.
In his farewell statement, Rutten expressed his regret: "I regret how things turned out, but I wish the team all the best."
ESPN reports that many Curacao players want Advocaat back, as they trust in the experience and managerial abilities of the 78-year-old strategist.
Curacao is currently the smallest country in terms of population to have ever participated in a men's World Cup, with approximately 156,000 inhabitants. From its ranking of 150th a decade ago, Curacao has now risen to 82nd in the FIFA rankings.
At the 2026 World Cup, Curacao is in the same group as Ecuador, Ivory Coast, and Germany. FIFA's expansion of the tournament to 48 teams gives the CONCACAF region three additional slots, opening up a historic opportunity for Curacao to make its mark on the biggest football stage on the planet.
