Coach Ruben Amorim is facing enormous pressure to save the hot seat at Man United.
After the humiliating 3-1 defeat to Brentford last weekend, sources from Daily Mail Sport said the mood among the club's board had changed, with some players even losing faith in the 40-year-old's ability to turn things around.
The upcoming clash with Sunderland at Old Trafford could be the final red line for Amorim from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers. While sacking Amorim before the end of the month would cost United around £12m in compensation, the club’s board understand the cost of a failed season would be much greater.
At a press conference on October 3, Amorim frankly admitted his dire situation:
"Nobody here is naive. We understand that results are needed to continue this project. This is a very big club with many sponsors and two owners, so the balance is really difficult. I just need one more win to have hope."
Amorim insisted that what hurt him most was losing the battle, not losing his job. He wanted to continue fighting, but stressed that the final decision was not in his hands.
Amorim's concerns have been compounded by the fact that tactical criticism from former players and pundits is taking a toll on the team's morale. Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has said he no longer has confidence in Amorim, while Gary Neville has criticised his lack of flexibility with the 3-4-2-1 formation.
In response, Amorim defended his football philosophy, but admitted his players were being influenced: "My players believe what you (the media) say that the problem is the system. I'm crazy about that... When you lose, you start to doubt everything about yourself, your teammates and the coach."
Amorim insists he knows the team better than any critic and will not let the media dictate his tactical decisions: "I am the coach of a big club. Can the media dictate what I do? That is impossible," Amorim said.
