"I love playing and watching chess," Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said on the sidelines of a training session on July 11. "I see football as a game of chess. When your opponent sets out their tactics, you have to be prepared and flexible."
He added: "I think this match (against PSG) will be like a very nerve-wracking chess game. PSG is a top club in Europe and the world . But every match is different. We will try to give a great match."
Maresca has guided Chelsea to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final with a mix of solid defence and sharp attack, but he has great admiration for his opponents.
"Definitely PSG and their coach, Luis Enrique, are a role model not only for me but for many football lovers. I believe they have an incredible squad, and coach Luis Enrique along with Pep Guardiola are the best in the world right now.
"This is a team of extraordinary players. It will be a difficult and wonderful challenge, but we have our own style. We have shown how we want to do things," said Mr. Maresca.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has mentioned a series of big surprises that have occurred since the start of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. It shows that the tournament is not lacking in drama.
He cited Fluminense's victory over Inter - the runner-up of the 2024-2025 Champions League, or Al Hilal's defeat of Man City in the round of 16. Notably, PSG also suffered a shocking defeat to Brazilian representative Botafogo in the group stage. Therefore, the 45-year-old strategist hopes that Chelsea will create a surprise against PSG, with their own unique style.
"Chelsea's style is different to Botafogo's," Maresca said. "We have the utmost respect for PSG. I love watching them. But we are here to do our best and win the title. We approach the game in our own way and will not change anything."
The FIFA Club World Cup final between Chelsea and PSG will take place on Monday, at 2:00 a.m. on July 14 (Vietnam time).
