On the afternoon of October 21, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) unexpectedly fired coach Masatada Ishii. It is worth mentioning that on the morning of the same day, the Japanese coach was still in a technical meeting with FAT. The above decision made coach Masatada Ishii feel indignant and thought that FAT was insincere.

Thairath newspaper said that Thailand's loss in both matches against Vietnam in the final of the AFF Cup 2024 was one of the reasons why coach Masatada Ishii was fired (Photo: Huong Duong).

Thairath newspaper pointed out 7 factors that caused the coach born in 1967 to lose his job. Among them, they surprisingly mentioned the Vietnam national team. This newspaper wrote: “One of the reasons that caused Masatada Ishii to lose his job was losing both matches to the Vietnam national team in the final of the AFF Cup 2024 and losing the championship to his opponent. Before that, Thailand also lost to the Philippines for the first time in 52 years.”

In fact, coach Masatada Ishii's reputation has gone down quite a bit after the Thai team failed to successfully defend the two AFF Cup championships in 2020 and 2022. In the past, the "War Elephants" rarely lost to the Vietnamese team, but at the tournament at the end of last year, they fell twice.

That made the Japanese coach receive heavy criticism. However, FAT still decided to trust this strategist to aim for a higher level tournament.

Thairath newspaper also said that the Thai team's defeat in the King's Cup final against Iraq at home and a 1-3 loss to Turkmenistan in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers significantly reduced confidence in coach Masatada Ishii.

The newspaper also pointed out a few other factors: “Coach Masatada Ishii ignored players in good form and only remained loyal to a group of players, despite their lack of playing time at club level. In addition, he did not create motivation and desire for the team.

The Japanese coach also ignored the advice from the FAT Technical Committee, including Chanwit Phonchiwin (Vice President of FAT), Piyapong Pue-on (Executive Member of FAT). This led to him not receiving sympathy from the Technical Committee in assessing the situation.

FAT will have to urgently search for a new coach for the national team as they will compete with Sri Lanka on November 18. Among them, Korean coaches such as Park Hang Seo and Shin Tae Yong are emerging as strong candidates.
