With a convincing 2-0 victory over the Philippines on June 11, the Indonesian team under the leadership of coach Shin Tae-yong officially won a ticket to the final qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia. This is considered a historic milestone for football in the archipelago country as previously, the Indonesian team had never advanced to the final qualifying round of a World Cup.
According to Indonesian media, after the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup, coach Shin Tae-yong left Indonesia. Suara.com quoted assistant coach of the Indonesian team Nova Arianto: "Coach Shin Tae-yong will leave Indonesia to return to Korea on June 15. He will only return to Indonesia on July 20."
Coach Shin Tae-yong will leave Indonesia for more than a month
The match against the Philippines on June 11 was also coach Shin Tae-yong’s last match with the Indonesian team, according to his current contract. Previously, the Korean coach’s contract with the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) expired at the end of 2023, but was temporarily extended until the end of June 2024.
When the Indonesian U.23 team reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 AFC U-23 Championship, the media in the archipelago reported that coach Shin Tae-yong had received a commitment from PSSI President Erick Thohir to extend his contract. Accordingly, Mr. Shin has completed the tasks set by Mr. Thohir, which are to bring the Indonesian team to the knockout round of the 2023 Asian Cup (round of 16) and help the country's U.23 team reach the semi-finals of the 2024 AFC U-23 Championship.
PSSI President and Coach Shin Tae-yong are said to have reached a verbal agreement, but have yet to sign a new contract.
Many sources from the Indonesian press said that coach Shin Tae-yong will have his contract extended by PSSI until 2027. The two sides will sign a new contract before the last two matches of the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia. However, up to now, when the Indonesian team has won the right to participate in the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia, the signing of a new contract has not progressed. Those involved, including coach Shin Tae-yong and PSSI President Erick Thohir, are still keeping silent on this issue.
