The list of Vietnam team preparing for two friendly matches against Hong Kong (June 15) and Syria (June 20) was announced today (June 2).
Notably, coach Philippe Troussier continues to trust most of the old faces who participated in the AFF Cup 2022, including players who have not played much in recent times such as Quang Hai and Cong Phuong.
The pillars of the Vietnamese team that were called back by Mr. Troussier include goalkeepers Van Lam, Nguyen Manh, Tan Truong, defenders Tien Dung, Ngoc Hai, Duy Manh, Thanh Binh, Viet Anh, Hong Duy, Van Thanh, Tan Tai, Van Hau, Thanh Chung, midfielders Hoang Duc, Hai Huy, Quang Hai, Ngoc Quang and the group of strikers with Tuan Hai, Tien Linh, Van Quyet, Cong Phuong, Van Toan.
In addition to the familiar players, the French coach surprised with new faces compared to the period when coach Park Hang-seo was in charge. That is the case of Dinh Trieu, Viet Hung (Hai Phong Club), Tien Anh, Manh Dung ( Viettel Club), Thanh Long, Ti Phong (Thanh Hoa Club), Van Duc (Ha Tinh Club), Trong Long (Hanoi Police Club). Some players that Mr. Park had tried out such as Xuan Manh (SLNA), Adriano Schmidt (Binh Dinh Club) also appeared.
Vietnam team promises to have useful friendly matches
The Vietnam national team is expected to regroup on June 7, after finishing round 11 of V-League 2023. During the V-League matches, Coach Troussier and his colleagues went to the stadiums to monitor the performance of the players as well as look for new players to call up to the team's concentration list.
Unlike the gathering last March, which was only meant to help the players warm up and get used to the new ideas in the playing style of the new French head coach, in this gathering, the team will participate in 2 international friendly matches, respectively against the Hong Kong team on June 15 at Lach Tray Stadium - Hai Phong and against the Syrian team on June 20 at Thien Truong Stadium - Nam Dinh . Therefore, in addition to prioritizing experienced players who are showing good form in the V-League, coach Philippe Troussier also expanded the list to give opportunities to new players, notably the presence of midfielder Le Pham Thanh Long, who is playing very well for Dong A Thanh Hoa, or Bui Van Duc of Hong Linh Ha Tinh - a Muong player known for his versatile playing style and possessing a strong physical foundation.
In addition, on the occasion of FIFA Days, coach Philippe Troussier also proposed to call up 3 players who are playing football abroad to return to join the national team, namely Nguyen Quang Hai (Pau Club, France), Nguyen Van Toan (Seoul E-Land Club, Korea) and Nguyen Cong Phuong (Yokohama Club, Japan). However, in this training session, the national team also has some regrettable absences such as midfielder Do Hung Dung (recently underwent appendix surgery), Phan Van Duc (injured), Nguyen Van Quyet (retired due to suspension)... In addition, fans will also witness the return of names who were previously in the U.23 Vietnam squad such as Truong Tien Anh, Lam Ti Phong, Trieu Viet Hung... Another name that attracts attention is Schmidt Adriano. This overseas Vietnamese central defender, whose Vietnamese name is Bui Duc Duy, was called up to the national team for the first time in March 2022 but has not had many opportunities to show his talent.
According to the plan, the Vietnamese team will regroup starting from June 5. However, because many players are still busy with the schedule of round 11 of the V-League, it will not be until June 7 that coach Philippe Troussier has his full squad.
According to the 2023 schedule, in addition to international friendly matches during FIFA Days in June, September and October, the Vietnamese team will play two matches in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup, on November 13 and November 21, respectively. The Vietnamese team's opponents will be determined after the draw results next July.
Previously, the Vietnamese team was determined to be in the same group as Japan, Iraq and Indonesia in the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup.
