Temporarily saying goodbye to U23 Vietnam after completing the goal of winning a ticket to the final round of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship, Coach Philippe Troussier returned to work leading the Vietnam national team to participate in a friendly match with Palestine at 7:30 p.m. on September 11 at Thien Truong Stadium ( Nam Dinh ).

At the pre-match press conference on the afternoon of September 10 in Nam Dinh, Coach Troussier said that having to coach the national team and U23 Vietnam at the same time, constantly traveling from Phu Tho - Ha Nam - Nam Dinh and vice versa is part of the job. He has clearly divided the work between the coaching staff of the two teams, to have the best coverage through reports from the assistant team.
Mr. Troussier shared: “Under my coaching, there is no boundary between the national team and U23 Vietnam. Both teams have the same vision, style of play, and organization. All the coaching staff and players will work together to protect and fight for the national flag. Of course, depending on the tournament and the time, there will be different goals, from which there will be a division in the coaching staff. For now, we are aiming to build the best squad for the first two matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November. We are trying to work hard to have the opportunity to go beyond Southeast Asia.”
According to the French strategist, in each training session of the two teams, he always tries to push the players to improve day by day. However, the “White Witch” also requires looking back at the player base and the current Vietnamese football system.
Mr. Troussier further explained: “Some players still lack the quality of passes, basic situations such as controlling, receiving the ball... I hope that there will be more coaches at the youth training level who will help young players perfect these basic skills. As for me, the players who are working now are somewhat improving and changing significantly. In their utmost efforts, the coaching staff will work to correct the players' shortcomings. The players also understand the problem, so they make up for it with discipline, a spirit of progress and always desire to surpass themselves.”
Coach Troussier continued to reiterate the ball control style he is building for the national team. The French strategist admitted that the players understand the intentions of the coaching staff, especially making the opponent's defense system move to exploit the gaps. However, according to Mr. Troussier, understanding and implementing the ball to bring about efficiency are completely different.
“That is the difference between teams. For example, Brazil needs 2 attempts to score a goal. Japanese players need 3 attempts to score. Vietnamese players need 10 attempts. That is something my players need to improve on. This comes from domestic tournaments, we need to create the best playing environment, and at the same time encourage players to play abroad... Talking about the World Cup, we don't just talk but also take action in many different aspects. Hopefully, the players will try their best to increase their scoring efficiency. If we have an idea, we need to execute it well,” he emphasized.
Coach Troussier affirmed that he did not close the door to the national team for any individual. “Since March 2023, he has worked with 80 players in the national team and U23 Vietnam. As for Van Quyet, although he was suspended for 8 matches in the V-League, he still showed his ability. However, I cannot confirm or say anything about the plan to use Quyet. But he is always in my calculations.”
