According to the global ranking Henley Passport Index, passports of 6 countries including Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, Italy and Spain can travel to the most countries in the world without a visa.
The ranking of "Most powerful passports 2024 - Henley Passport Index" was announced on January 10 by global residence and citizenship consulting firm Henley & Partners. Notably, the passports of Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, Italy and Spain are all equally powerful. Citizens of the above countries can visit 194 other countries around the world without a visa.
Japan is one of the 6 countries with the highest passport index in the world.
The global passport ranking is based on exclusive data provided by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and creator of the passport index, noted that the average number of destinations that a traveler can travel visa-free to has nearly doubled, from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024.
Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea have dominated the global passport rankings for the past five years, but this year’s top five is dominated by Europeans. Specifically, Finland and Sweden’s passports are tied with South Korea in second place (193 destinations), while Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands are in third place (192 destinations). Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal and the UK are tied for fourth place, while Greece, Malta and Switzerland are in fifth place.
Notably, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has now become the country with the highest increase in passport rankings in the past decade. The country has gained 106 destinations and visa-free points since 2014 and secured 11th place in 2024.
Vietnam's passport power ranking drops 5 places.
Meanwhile, Vietnam ranked 87th out of 104 places, down 5 places compared to the last ranking in July 2023. However, the number of countries and territories that Vietnamese citizens are allowed to enter without a visa still reached 55 destinations.
In order to attract international tourists with the goal of promoting economic development, the Vietnamese National Assembly has passed the Law on Amendments and Supplements to a number of articles of the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens and the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in 2023.
From August 15, 2023, the visa duration will be increased from 30 days to 90 days, valid for multiple entries. In addition, the National Assembly also agreed to increase the temporary stay at the border gate for people entering under unilateral visa exemption from 15 days to 45 days.
