On June 17, RT shared battlefield video filmed near Soledar, a town in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic. The TOS-1A system, widely known by the nickname “Solntsepyok” – “Scorching Sunlight,” fired multiple shells in succession to attack the target.
The attack was captured on an infrared camera by a surveillance drone. The video shows the moment from when the projectiles lit up the night sky to the huge explosion when they hit the target.
The TOS-1A system is essentially a short-range rocket launcher mounted on a tank chassis, but in Russia the TOS-1A is classified as a “heavy flamethrower”. The TOS-1A operates as a multiple launch rocket system with 24 rocket launchers carrying thermobaric or incendiary warheads. When the warhead explodes, it creates high temperatures and consumes oxygen, effectively destroying targets within a range equivalent to 6 football fields.
The TOS-1A is 6.86m long, 3.46m wide, 2.6m high and weighs up to 46 tonnes. The TOS-1A is mounted on a modified T-72 or T-90 tank chassis, has a maximum range of 6km, a maximum speed of 65km/h and a range of 550km. However, in recent years, the TOS-1A has been upgraded to a range of 10km.

In its most recent daily press briefing, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that various types of Ukrainian Armed Forces equipment were destroyed by Russian fire, including various types of artillery, Western-supplied systems and older Soviet-era systems.
On the front, the most intense fighting continues near Artyomovsk, as well as in Ukraine's Kharkiv region. Recently, Russian forces have overcome several defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kharkiv region.
The Russian military offensive is part of an effort to push Ukrainian forces away from Russian territory and stop artillery and drone attacks on Russian border areas, including the city of Belgorod. The Russian Defense Ministry said the Ukrainian attacks mainly targeted civilian infrastructure and residential areas and caused significant damage.
