A 10th grader is worried because his class does not have the subjects he plans to take for university entrance exams. The school and the Department of Education and Training said they have tried to resolve the issue but could not meet his wishes.

Informing Tuoi Tre newspaper, student D.NQB - grade 10 student at Le Hong Phong High School, Hoa Hoi commune, Tay Ninh - said that he is facing a 'dilemma' when his class does not have subjects in the block he plans to take the university entrance exam.

"Either change to another block, or transfer school"

Specifically, B. said that the class did not have chemistry in the official timetable. Meanwhile, B. wished to take the university entrance exam for block A00 (math - physics - chemistry) as well as future career orientation related to engineering fields.

"Not being able to study chemistry formally and have a score in my transcript will be a huge disadvantage for me because I won't be able to choose chemistry for my high school graduation exam," B. said.

According to B., he submitted a request to the principal to study chemistry with another class to get points on his report card. "However, the school told me to change to another class, otherwise I would transfer schools," B. explained.

Upon receiving the feedback, the Tay Ninh Department of Education and Training requested the school to report the incident. According to the school, in the 2025-2026 school year, the school recruited 178 students. After being approved by the Department of Education and Training, the school allowed parents and students to choose subject combinations according to the Department's instructions.

Based on the reality, the school builds the subject combinations for grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, combination 1 includes geography, economic and legal education, information technology, and technology. Combination 2 includes chemistry, biology, technology, and information technology. Combination 3 includes geography, economic and legal education, information technology, and technology. And combination 4 includes chemistry, economic and legal education, biology, and information technology.

Based on the results of the selection of the optional subject combinations, the school notified the parents and students to register. The school then assigned the admitted students to four 10th grade classes with subject combinations and study clusters. Student B. chose and was placed in a class with a combination of physics, geography, technology, and informatics with the topics of informatics, physics, and technology.

Must fit within the existing school

On September 22, the school received a request from a parent to add a subject to meet the university admission requirements. The school board explained to the parent and student.

Accordingly, the regulations for opening classes are based on the minimum number of requests, the school's current staff and teaching conditions, and the combination of elective subjects that the school has built according to the school's current conditions.

"This student is following the class timetable and cannot take part in a chemistry class in another class because the timetable overlaps with another subject. At the same time, it will affect the student's learning results when studying a subject that is not in the registered subject group," the school reported.

According to the school, B. was placed in the class that he registered for. If considering the subject combination of this class, B. can still register for university in technical-related majors such as physics and technology.

"The school has clearly assigned and assigned specific tasks to each member of the board of directors to fully and clearly respond to suggestions from parents and students related to the subject selection subject. There is no lack of responsibility," the report stated.

In addition, the school's report also affirmed that the classification is entirely based on professional regulations, without discrimination, and always respects the wishes of parents and students.

"The selection of subject combinations must be consistent with the school's current conditions regarding teaching staff, facilities, and management regulations. The school is currently short of 10 teachers in many subjects, and the school's facilities are still lacking and need to be fully equipped," the school added.

According to the school, in order to satisfy the wishes of parents and student B. about being able to take the university entrance exam with block A00, as well as future career orientation related to technical fields, the school board has created maximum conditions for students by consulting and immediately resolving so that students can transfer to schools with subject combinations suitable to their choices, while the school does not have the subject combinations that parents and students request.

How do other schools handle it?

Speaking with Tuoi Tre, some high school principals in Tay Ninh province said that before enrolling students, the school often orients training groups based on the actual number of teachers, facilities and related conditions.

After enrollment and the school offers training combinations, students can choose the combination they want, suitable for their graduation exam orientation and future career orientation.

Another principal said that in case many students want to take extra classes to fit the exam group, the school may rely on the conditions of teachers and facilities to organize additional tutoring classes. However, if there are only a few cases, the school will usually reorient the students to choose the class with the most suitable combination for them.

As a remote school, it lacks many facilities.

A deputy director of the Department of Education and Training of Tay Ninh province said he had discussed with the school's leaders about solutions after receiving the report. "This is a school in a remote area, currently lacking many facilities and what the school presented in the report is in accordance with regulations.

Furthermore, this is an isolated case, so the school cannot be required to rearrange the subject combinations to serve one student. Letting students register to study with other classes can also lead to disruptions, affecting many other cases and the general educational environment of the school," he said.

Therefore, this person also agrees with the plan that if students are really not satisfied with the current class combinations, they can find nearby schools in the area that have the desired combinations to transfer to. The Department of Education and Training will create conditions and support for students to transfer schools.
