The test scope is entirely within the secondary school math program according to the 2018 general education program, including three knowledge streams: Numbers and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, Statistics and Probability.
The exam aims to assess three key groups of competencies: Mathematical thinking and reasoning; Problem solving; Mathematical modeling.
The Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City requires students to know how to apply the knowledge they have learned to solve real-life situations, promote self-study and creativity, and avoid rote learning or cramming. The structure of the exam is to help students visualize the necessary skills when entering high school.

The 2026 Math exam is expected to include 7 questions, totaling 10 points, in which many questions require mathematical modeling from life contexts.
Lesson 1. (1.5 points) Given the function y = ax²
a) Draw the graph (P) of the above function.
b) Find the points belonging to (P) that satisfy the given conditions.
Lesson 2. (1 point) Given the quadratic equation ax²+ bx + c = 0
a) Find the condition for the equation to have a solution.
b) Applying Viete's formula, calculate the value of the expression related to the solutions.
Lesson 3. (1.5 points) Practical math problems related to probability and statistics.
Lesson 4. (1 point)
a) Write expression A representing a certain quantity x in a real-life problem.
b) Find the value of x so that A satisfies a certain condition.
Lesson 5. (1 point) Practical math problems related to geometry:
Perimeter, area of triangle, quadrilateral, arc length, circumference of circle, area of circle , circular sector, circular segment, circular ring...
Lateral area, total area, volume of solids in reality...
Lesson 6. (1 point) Practical problems related to equations, inequalities, and systems of first-degree equations with two variables.
Lesson 7. (3 points) Plane geometry problem consists of 3 questions.
a) Prove that 4 points lie on a circle, the elements are parallel, perpendicular, equal ...
b) Prove that the formulas, elements are equal, collinear, concurrent...
c) Calculate length, perimeter, area, angle measurement...
In the 2025 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City (old), 76,356 candidates took the Math exam. Of these, 36 candidates scored 10; 68 candidates scored 9.75; 93 candidates scored 9.5; 143 candidates scored 9.25 and 336 candidates scored 9. The score with the most candidates was 7 with 4,580 students; followed by 6.75 with 4,345 students.
However, the Math subject also recorded more than 28,000 candidates scoring below 5 points, including 125 candidates scoring 0.25 points; 108 candidates scoring 0.5 points; 166 candidates scoring 0.75 points and 326 candidates scoring 1 point.
The number of candidates with math scores below 5 accounts for nearly 1/3 of the total number of candidates. However, this number is much lower than previous years, when half of the candidates had scores below 5.
The 10th grade entrance exam in 2026 is the first exam to take place after Ho Chi Minh City merged with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau . The scale of the exam is expected to expand, the number of candidates will increase significantly compared to previous years.
After the administrative boundary arrangement, Ho Chi Minh City has 490 public and non-public secondary schools, with over 750,000 students. According to statistics, Ho Chi Minh City currently has about 150,000 ninth graders - the highest number ever.
