On the morning of November 20, Ho Chi Minh City held a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the city's Education sector (1975-2025) and the 43rd anniversary of Vietnamese Teachers' Day.
Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc reviewed history: After the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born, President Ho Chi Minh identified "fighting hunger, illiteracy and foreign invaders" as three key tasks, placing education in a special position in the national construction process.
Reviewing the achievements of the industry, Mr. Duoc said that Ho Chi Minh City is the first locality to complete universal primary education (1995) and eliminate illiteracy (1996), and is recognized as meeting universal literacy standards in 2024.

The city maintains its position among the top three localities in the country in terms of mass training performance, while strongly developing its specialized school system.
Many breakthrough programs were implemented early and effectively, such as the international standard foreign language and information technology program and the “happy school” model at 100% of educational institutions. The city has recognized 100 “digital schools” to promote strong digital transformation.
The city also implemented a project to train international-level human resources in eight key industries, while building thousands of new classrooms, aiming for the goal of 300 classrooms/10,000 people.
“These efforts have helped Ho Chi Minh City be recognized by UNESCO as a member of the Global Learning Cities Network in 2024, affirming the city's position and determination along with the persistent contributions of its teaching staff,” said Mr. Duoc.
Chairman Nguyen Van Duoc emphasized that the mark of the education sector is always closely linked to each step of the city's transformation. Right after the liberation day, amidst countless difficulties, teachers still built makeshift classrooms, used white chalk to sow the first seeds of knowledge, many people left the city for difficult areas, overcoming war and deprivation with only the ideal of sowing letters.
“HCMC is always proud of its team of teachers with good expertise, rich personality, and leading in emulation movements. The city’s development in all fields bears the mark of the education sector and the millions of excellent citizens trained by the sector,” he emphasized.
Ho Chi Minh City possesses distinct potentials and faces many new opportunities, but also faces many difficulties and challenges. The education sector not only imparts knowledge, awakens potential, fosters aspirations and trains life skills and global citizenship skills for future generations, but the most important thing is still moral education. "Planting people" must start with personality education, then knowledge and skills. In the new context, Ho Chi Minh City identifies education as the core foundation, the center of sustainable development strategy and one of three strategic breakthroughs.
The head of the city government requested the education sector to continue to innovate strongly, build a team of teachers with solid expertise and good ethics, innovate teaching methods, apply technology, improve moral education and life skills, so that each student can become a responsible and compassionate citizen. In particular, the education sector needs to effectively implement the "happy school" criteria set in 100% of educational institutions, build a safe and respectful environment, and spread happiness to each family and the whole society.
