The “second mothers”
With the motto "Where there are orphans, there is the Association movement", the Associations at all levels proactively coordinate with local authorities, mobilize businesses and philanthropists to maintain resources for programs and models to help and support orphans overcome difficulties.
Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union Vo Thi Thuy Yen said: "We identify orphans as the most disadvantaged group, so the care work must not be interrupted. After the merger, the area is larger, but with the determination of the Union at all levels and the joint efforts of the community, support for the children is implemented promptly and continuously."
One of the most prominent marks in the care and support of orphans is the Godmother program. Since the Godmother program was launched by the Vietnam Women's Union at the end of 2021, hundreds of orphans in the province have received companionship and love from "second mothers" - members, union officials or philanthropists connected by the Women's Union at all levels.
Depending on the conditions of the "godmother" and the needs of the children, the program has appropriate activities such as: cash allowance, tuition, necessities, school supplies, living expenses for the children,... And, most importantly, the love and spiritual care of the "godmothers" for the children.
Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, President of the Women's Union of Khanh Hau Ward Luong Ngoc Hanh shared: “After the merger, the Women's Union of the ward adopted 5 orphans. In addition to paying tuition, buying books, uniforms, and school supplies for the children at the beginning of the school year, every month, the "godmothers" and the Union visit each child's house to visit, give cash (500,000 VND), gifts, and necessities to the children. Many children have gradually opened their hearts and studied better. That is a precious spiritual gift for us."

As an orphan, with a difficult family situation, and having been cared for and helped by her “godmother” for the past 4 years, Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc (15 years old, residing in Khanh Hau ward) emotionally said: “Before, I thought I would have to drop out of school because I didn’t have money to buy books. But since having my “godmother”, I have been able to go to school, cared for, and encouraged like a child in the family. I am very happy, I promise to try my best to study well so as not to disappoint my mother’s love.”
More orphan support programs
In parallel with the Godmother program, the Women's Union in the province has also created many practical models suitable to local conditions. Typically in My Loc commune, members of the Women's Union are no longer unfamiliar with the model of Saving money by raising piggy banks, supporting the care and nurturing of orphans.
By saving a small amount of money in daily life of members, nearly 100 piggy banks have been "raised". From the beginning of 2025 until now, the model has raised nearly 350 million VND, supporting 11 orphans in the area.
Nguyen Thai Phuong Nghi (living in My Loc commune) received support from the Savings model of raising piggy banks and supporting the care and nurturing of orphans of the Women's Union of My Loc commune.
Nguyen Thai Phuong Nghi (10 years old, living in My Loc commune), lost her mother in the Covid-19 pandemic and is living with her father. Thanks to the Piggy Bank Savings model, supporting the care and upbringing of orphans, Nghi was supported with part of her study expenses. Nghi shared: “My mother's death due to the Covid-19 pandemic is the saddest thing in my life. Fortunately, thanks to the care and help of the women in the commune's Women's Union, I no longer feel alone. They are like my second mothers.”
Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, President of the Women's Union of My Loc Commune, Vo Ngoc Huyen, said: "We consider the piggy bank model not only a way to save money but also a way to send love, so that children know that they are not left behind. In addition to receiving support for tuition, clothes, and monthly necessities, children also participate in many fun activities organized by the local Women's Union."
Along with the Godmother program, the Savings and Piggy Bank model, supporting the care and nurturing of orphans; Loving Learning Corner; Overcoming Difficulty Scholarship;… continue to be implemented to provide timely support to orphans in the province.
Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union Vo Thi Thuy Yen added: "From the beginning of 2025 until now, through many support activities, the Women's Union at all levels in the province has mobilized more than 1.7 billion VND to care for and help more than 800 orphans in the province. In the coming time, the Union will continue to increase social resources, promote the effectiveness of models, apply digital transformation, and connect volunteers to orphans in need of help"./.
