RT reported that according to the Geophysical Agency of the Russian Academy of Sciences , the earthquake was initially recorded at 7.5 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter about 136 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at around 11:30 a.m. on July 30 (local time).
The US Geological Survey (USGS) later assessed the earthquake at magnitude 8.8.
"Severe tsunami warning on the coast of Avacha Bay," Russia's emergency services said, warning of a potentially dangerous tsunami along the Kamchatka coast.
Residents reported strong shaking during the initial aftershocks, causing furniture to shake, appliances to fall and sirens to sound.
Video from the scene showed walls collapsing at a kindergarten in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, although no casualties were reported. The Russian Emergencies Ministry said the earthquake reached a magnitude of 8 in some parts of the city.

Many countries, including the US, Japan and New Zealand, have issued tsunami warnings after an earthquake off the coast of Russia.
The US National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for the entire West Coast of the United States, as well as parts of Canada and Alaska. A tsunami warning has also been issued for the entire state of Hawaii.
Authorities in California are currently assessing the threat. "Flooding is possible in coastal areas," California authorities warned.
The Japan National Tourism Organization issued an emergency warning for areas at risk of a 3-meter-high tsunami within hours.
New Zealand has also issued a tsunami warning, urging people in coastal areas to stay away from beaches and coastlines.
