According to the Foreign Investment Agency, in the first quarter of 2025, Chinese FDI capital in Vietnam increased by 68.5%, accounting for 29.5% of the total newly registered capital. This increase and the phenomenon of supply chain shifts are increasing the demand for human resources who know Chinese in Vietnam.

Chinese Language Training at Universities - Growing but Lacking Specialization

Currently, universities in Vietnam have begun to promote Chinese language training with a significant increase in the total number of enrollments. However, the development of this major in universities still lacks depth, especially in the fields of science and technology.

Specifically, although the number of schools training in Chinese Language has reached 51/400 schools with more than 7,673 targets, there is still no specialized training program on Chinese for the field of science and technology. In particular, issues related to training program design, quality of lecturers and suitability of the curriculum are still major challenges that need to be solved.

Current status of short-term Chinese language training model in Vietnam - Need for practical connection

Although the number of searches for Chinese courses in Vietnam has skyrocketed from more than 10,000 in 2018 to more than 100 million in 2024, the reality is that current Chinese training programs still lack connection with the actual needs of businesses and majors. These courses are still spontaneous, not closely linked to training institutions and not suitable for the needs of businesses.

Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Mai - Director of Bac Nha Institute - shared about the training model combining schools, businesses and research institutes at Fudan University, China as a model for Vietnam to implement. This will help build a sustainable training foundation, with high-quality human resources, ready to meet market demands.

Opportunities and challenges of Chinese Science and Technology in the future

With the strong increase in FDI capital and high-tech investment from China, the Chinese Language industry, especially the Science and Technology major, is opening up huge opportunities for Vietnamese students. Large technology corporations such as Foxconn, Luxshare, BYD... are stepping up the recruitment of human resources proficient in Chinese, especially those with a solid professional background. The salary for these positions is 18-30% higher than other industries, reflecting the true value of language proficiency and professional skills.

Sharing at the workshop, Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Mai - Director of Bac Nha Institute of Applied Language Research commented:

The Chinese Language Department, oriented towards Science and Technology, is converging many favorable conditions to make a breakthrough in the next 5 years - both in terms of market demand and national policy. In this context, Bac Nha Institute is determined to continue to contribute more to training high-quality human resources, while playing an important role as a bridge betweeneducation and technology transfer in the digital age.”

However, the industry is also facing major challenges such as: lack of suitable specialized curriculum, lack of dual-specialized lecturers, and the gap between training and business practice.
