The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam are entering the first widespread thunderstorm season, bringing milder weather after many days of hot and humid conditions. Today, Ho Chi Minh City and many provinces and cities in Southern Vietnam are likely to experience thunderstorms from late afternoon onwards.

Simultaneously, localized thunderstorm clusters will form in multiple waves across the country, causing heavy thunderstorms from land to sea on May 17th, along with the risk of lightning and strong winds.

A large thunderstorm is causing rain along the northern coast. The image was captured by an online satellite cloud tracking application at 6:00 AM on May 17th.

On May 17th, both day and night, the northern region experienced scattered showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall generally ranging from 15-30mm, and some areas receiving over 80mm. In the late afternoon and evening of the same day, the area from Thanh Hoa to Hue City and the South Central coastal region experienced showers, with some areas receiving over 70mm of rain.

According to meteorological experts, the rain in the North is caused by the influence of an upper-level wind convergence zone combined with mid-level atmospheric disturbances, leading to strong convection. Thunderstorms can occur suddenly throughout the day, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rain in a short period of time.

Therefore, there is a risk of localized flooding in major cities, including Hanoi . The mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam need to be wary of landslides. This rainy period in the North is likely to last until around May 22nd.

In Central Vietnam, the widespread heatwave is subsiding. Local thunderstorms may occur in the late afternoon and evening, especially in the western mountainous areas. This heatwave will end in Central Vietnam from May 18th.
