Houthis declare firm, US sends private message to Iran

Specifically, Mr. Nasruldeen Amer, a spokesman for Houthi, told Al Jazeera on January 13: "This new attack will have a firm, strong and effective response."

The Houthis made the announcement after the group was hit by a US attack in Yemen on the night of January 12. Washington's independent bombing came just one day after a large-scale airstrike jointly carried out by the US and the UK.

According to the Houthi side, there were no casualties in the US attack.

Mohammed Abdulsalam, another Houthi spokesman, also struck a tough tone, telling Reuters that the US strikes had “no significant impact” on the group’s ability to attack ships in the Red Sea.

According to Houthi, the shooting at ships in the Red Sea was carried out by Houthi to prevent ships that the group suspected of having connections with Israel, to show support for Hamas forces in the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The tense situation in the Red Sea has added to concerns about the prospect of a Hamas-Israel conflict spreading across the Middle East. The Houthis, who control Sanaa and much of western and northern Yemen, have also fired drones and missiles at Israel.

Iran is believed to be a backer of the Houthis in Yemen. US President Joe Biden said on January 13 that Washington had sent a private message to Tehran about the Houthi attacks. He did not reveal details, only telling reporters: "We have delivered the message privately and we are confident that we are well prepared."

UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg on January 13 called for maximum restraint by all involved and warned of the increasingly precarious situation in the region.

In Sanaa, Yemeni government official Mohammed Samei called the airstrikes an act of "brutal aggression" and marked a new phase in the war the country has endured for 10 years.

Hussein Kabsi, a retired Yemeni government official, said supporting the Palestinians was a "religious and moral obligation".

"Our position is unwavering, we will (continue) to stand with our brothers in Palestine and Gaza until they win and until the entire Palestinian land is 'liberated', not just Gaza," Kabsi said.
