(GLO) - On June 28, the Gia Lai Provincial People's Court held a first-instance trial and sentenced seven defendants for the crimes of "Organizing gambling" and "Gambling".

Specifically, two defendants, Phan Đình Trường (born in 1984) and Tăng Khắc Khanh (born in 1999, both residing in Phú Túc town, Krông Pa district), received sentences of 3 years and 1 year respectively for the crime of "Organizing gambling". The remaining defendants, including Bùi Tấn Hương (born in 1976, residing in Sơn Hòa district, Phú Yên province) received 18 months in prison; Phạm Ngọc Thường (born in 1986, residing in Phú Hòa district, Phú Yên province) received 14 months in prison; Bùi Trung Kiên (born in 1979, residing in Chư Gu commune, Krông Pa district); Trương Văn Hiệu (born in 1961, residing in Phú Túc town); and Trần Vĩnh Lộc (born in 1983, residing in Phú Cần commune, Krông Pa district), received non-custodial correctional sentences for the crime of "Gambling".

According to the case file, in early 2019, Truong rented a house from a resident on Tran Hung Dao Street (in Group 9, Phu Tuc town) to work as a carpenter and raise fighting roosters. There, Truong invited several people passionate about raising fighting roosters to his house to gamble and bring their roosters out for training and sale. However, from the end of September 2022 to October 22, 2022, on Saturdays and Sundays, Truong enticed individuals passionate about cockfighting in Phu Tuc town and other localities to bring their roosters to his house to organize gambling in the form of cockfighting and participate in betting on wins and losses. To facilitate his activities, Truong also recruited Khanh (his nephew) to clean the cockfighting arena and serve food and drinks to the gamblers, thereby profiting from the difference in odds.

On October 22, 2022, Huong, Thuong, Kien, Hieu, and Loc brought money to gamble at Truong's cockfighting arena. While gambling on cockfights, they were discovered and caught red-handed by law enforcement, who seized over 108 million VND and other related evidence from the gambling den.
