After a long period of being affected by US sanctions, Huawei has taken the lead in the smartphone market in China in the second quarter of 2025. This is the first time in more than 4 years that the Shenzhen-based manufacturer has returned to the number one position, marking a strong recovery in the context of the domestic market showing signs of decline.

According to newly released data from IDC Corporate, Huawei accounted for about 18% of the smartphone market share in China in the second quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, rivals such as Vivo and Oppo both recorded declines. Total smartphone shipments in the East Asian country fell 4% year-on-year to 69 million devices.

Huawei’s comeback has been fueled by innovations in product design and localized software, appealing to domestic consumers amid falling demand and weak consumer confidence. The company has introduced models using its own chips, marking a major step forward after years of limited access to Western semiconductor technology.

In 2024, Huawei will also launch the world's first commercial device with a triple-folding screen, and accelerate the rollout of phones using its own HarmonyOS operating system, completely replacing Google's Android. These products are considered to play a central role in Huawei's technology autonomy strategy since the embargo.

IDC’s report notes that the second quarter of 2025 is the first time the Chinese smartphone market has recorded a decline after six consecutive quarters of growth, due to cuts in government subsidy programs and the lack of recovery in consumer confidence.

“Despite the recent US-China trade deal, the overall economic environment is still facing persistent challenges, with weak consumer confidence. Smartphone demand is unlikely to grow significantly in the short term,” said Arthur Guo, senior analyst at IDC China.

Huawei's comeback is a testament to its ability to adapt quickly and pursue independent technology development amid growing geopolitical pressure and domestic competition.
