The whole Hung Yen province has more than 5 thousand hectares of longan. Every year from the end of July to August, the longan gardens seem to put on a new coat - the yellow-brown color of ripe fruit, mixed with the dense green color of leaves. Longan ripens with tea, but right from the beginning of the season, the whole area is filled with the fragrant scent of longan, bustling with the sounds of people picking, the sound of vehicles transporting goods, and the joyful cheers of traders and tourists from near and far.
I still remember the first time I stood in the middle of a longan garden in the main season. Looking at the clusters of fruit hanging heavy on the branches, it seemed like I wanted to completely dedicate to people the most quintessential things that heaven and earth have accumulated. Each longan fruit is cherished like a precious gift. Just gently peeling off the thin, light brown-yellow skin, the fragrance spreads - an unmistakable fragrance, both sweet and refreshing. The longan pulp is thick, crispy, embracing the small seed inside. The rich sweetness, combined with that gentle fragrance, makes people who have tasted it once unable to forget. I have had the opportunity to travel to many other provinces and cities, regions that also have longan. But to be honest, the flavor of Hung Yen longan is unmatched anywhere. That difference comes not only from the endemic longan variety, but also from the soil, from the diligence and experience accumulated over many generations of the people here. And among the longan gardens laden with fruit, people often visit the Ancestor longan tree - the place considered to be the origin of the longan variety famous throughout the country. That ancient longan tree is still standing firmly in the yard of Hien Pagoda, witnessing the passing of many seasons, still blooming, bearing fruit, still preserved as a treasure of the homeland. Hung Yen longan is not only a product but also a pride, a living heritage of the land rich in tradition.
Nowadays, Hung Yen longan is not only limited to domestic consumption. Dozens of longan growing areas have been systematically planned, produced according to VietGAP process, meeting export standards to the US, Japan, China... Hung Yen longan fruit has gone far, contributing to the brand of Vietnamese agricultural products on the world map. But what is more special is that the longan gardens here have become attractive destinations for tourists, who not only want to eat delicious fruit, but also want to pick the fruit, see the care process and enjoy the peaceful, prosperous space in the Northern countryside. Many groups of tourists from countries such as Singapore, Japan, France, Germany... have visited Hung Yen during the longan season. They made appointments in advance by phone, eagerly waiting for the weekend to be able to walk under the green longan canopies, listening to the story of each longan variety, each land. Perhaps that is why the longan season in Hung Yen is not simply an agricultural season. It is the season of joyful reunions when children far from home return home to visit and visit the garden to pick fruit. It is the season of hope when each longan truck carries the expectation of a bountiful harvest. It is the season of memories when just a whiff of fragrance is enough to remind us of the old days, of climbing trees to pick fruit, or the days when our mothers wrapped longan in paper bags to give to distinguished guests...
Coming to Hung Yen this season, don't just stop by. Stop, walk among the laden longan garden, pick yourself a bunch of plump fruit, peel off the thin skin and close your eyes to enjoy. You will understand why Hung Yen people still preserve the longan tree as a treasure. And why, among so many products of Vietnam, Hung Yen longan is still a special flavor, making people linger forever!
