Mai Chau is a mountainous district with many ethnic groups living together such as Thai, Muong, Kinh, Mong, Dao, Tay... Each ethnic group has its own cultural characteristics, creating a "picture" with strong identity and a diverse and unique cultural treasure. Identifying the strengths of the locality, Mai Chau district always pays attention to preserving, maintaining and promoting the cultural values of ethnic groups so that culture becomes a "lever" for tourism development, thereby developing the socio -economy and improving people's lives.

Linen fabrics painted with beeswax patterns are always popular with tourists when coming to Pa Co commune, Mai Chau district.

The Mong people in Mai Chau live in two communes, Hang Kia and Pa Co. The people here still preserve many traditional cultural features such as: linen weaving, indigo dyeing, brocade embroidery, beeswax painting, etc. Comrade Sung A Mang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Pa Co commune, shared: In recent years, people have known how to exploit advantages, especially cultural characteristics to develop tourism . From stone fences to house architecture, decorative spaces in every corner of homestays, costumes, writing, ethnic musical instruments, traditional crafts, daily life, etc. create a rich cultural space so that visitors coming here not only remember the beautiful natural landscape but also understand the cultural traditions and lives of the people.

In particular, since 2017, the Mong people have successfully restored the Gau Tao festival. This festival is both important in the cultural and religious activities of the people and a highlight for developing local tourism. Mr. Delamotte Patrick Marianne - a tourist from France, after visiting the village and being guided by the locals on how to draw beeswax on linen, shared: "When coming to Mai Chau and Pa Co, I and the people in the group were very satisfied. The climate here is fresh and cool, the people are friendly and enthusiastic. We got to see the locals hand-paint patterns on linen to create beautiful fabrics. I was very interested and impressed with the culture of the people here."

With consistent direction through 3 congresses from 2010 - 2025, Mai Chau District Party Committee has always oriented to build the district into a key tourist area of the province, an attractive, friendly and safe destination. Along with that, the Party Committee and people of all ethnic groups in the district are determined to well implement Resolution No. 15 of the District Party Committee on preserving the cultural identity of ethnic groups in the district for the period of 2020 - 2025, with a vision to 2030, focusing on the following areas: preserving and conserving the culture of traditional stilt houses, folk songs, folk dances, hat xap, xoe dance, bamboo dance, Keeng long dance art and unique culinary culture, especially recreating 2 festivals of the Mong and Thai ethnic groups. This is considered the right direction of Mai Chau district, trusted and supported by the people. Thereby promoting good traditional cultural values, while contributing to preventing and repelling backward customs and practices.

Comrade Hoang Duc Minh, Vice Chairman of Mai Chau District People's Committee said: Determined to create a "leverage" in tourism development, in recent times, Mai Chau district has synchronously implemented many solutions such as: increasing investment in infrastructure serving tourism; focusing on vocational training, improving service quality at tourism service establishments; continuing to preserve and exploit cultural values into tourism products; strengthening promotion and promotion of tourism stimulus activities; promoting investment attraction... From the effective implementation of these important decisions, the tourism "picture" of Mai Chau district has improved a lot and was voted by the Traveller Review Award as one of the 10 friendliest destinations in Vietnam in early 2023.
