Brazilian football legend suffers severe burns

Lucio, a former Brazil and Inter Milan defender, was rushed to hospital in critical condition with serious burns to several parts of his body.

Lucio is receiving intensive care.

According to Brazilian media, the incident occurred at Lucio's home on May 15 (local time). Lucio is currently being treated at a hospital in the capital Brasilia and has been transferred to the intensive care unit.

A source from La Gazzetta dello Sport revealed that the burn occurred due to an accident at the home of the 47-year-old former player, however specific details have not been released.

The hospital said Lucio was "conscious, stable and under constant observation". The former footballer's family shared: "He is receiving all the necessary medical care. The burned areas are being treated intensively and his health is progressing positively".

Lucio's family thanked fans: "We are grateful for the wishes, prayers and love that everyone has sent during this sensitive time. We ask that everyone respect our privacy. Any updates will be communicated through official channels. With faith and strength, we believe that Lucio will recover soon."

Lucio is known as a steely center-back in the Brazilian national team's defense from 2000 to 2011, notably winning the 2002 World Cup. He played a total of 105 times for the Selecao and scored 4 goals.

At club level, Lucio played for Guara and Internacional before moving to Europe with Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. In 2009, he joined Inter Milan and became a mainstay in the historic treble-winning squad of the 2009/10 season under coach Jose Mourinho.

After leaving Europe, Lucio returned to Brazil to play for several small clubs and spent the 2015/16 season in India with FC Goa. He officially retired in 2020 with Brasiliense FC.
