In the context of sedans gradually giving way to SUVs in the global market, Hyundai still shows its steadfastness with the Sonata sedan line when launching the 2026 version.

In this upgrade, the Korean automaker not only streamlined its product portfolio but also added two completely new versions for the 2026 Hyundai Sonata: Sonata SEL Sport and Sonata Hybrid Blue, aiming to diversify choices for modern consumers. The Sonata SEL Sport replaces the SEL and SEL Convenience trims. Starting at $29,000, the new model comes with features that were previously only available on higher trims, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel, wireless charging, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, and acoustic glass.
The eight-way power driver's seat is heated, the dual-zone climate control and a series of technological amenities such as a 12.3-inch central entertainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a 4.2-inch digital clock cluster and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are also present. The safety system of this version is not inferior to its competitors when it owns a comprehensive driving support package including smart cruise control integrated with Stop & Go feature, blind spot warning, lane keeping assist, automatic headlights and rear cross traffic warning. Despite being labeled “Sport,” the car still uses the familiar 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with 191 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque, combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the option of front-wheel drive or AWD. This is clearly a “sport” version with a comfortable style, aimed at family users rather than speed enthusiasts.
Along with the sports version, Hyundai also introduced the Hybrid Blue variant - the most accessible Sonata hybrid model ever, starting at just $29,050. Compared to last year's base hybrid, which started at $31,250, the new price significantly lowers the barrier for consumers looking for a fuel-efficient sedan. The Hybrid Blue is essentially the Sonata SE version equipped with a 2.0L hybrid system combined with an electric motor, for a total capacity of 192 horsepower. The most notable point of this version is its impressive fuel economy. With a combined fuel economy rating of just 4.6 liters per 100 km, it beats the current SEL and Limited Hybrid trims. Other notable features include dual-zone automatic climate control and paddle shifters, which add to the driving experience without significantly increasing production costs.
Meanwhile, the Sonata SEL Hybrid also received a significant upgrade with a panoramic sunroof becoming standard equipment. The starting price of this version is now $27,300, a $400 increase over before. By adding a low-cost hybrid version and a comfortable sport version, Hyundai shows a flexible approach to holding on to the sedan market that is gradually being overwhelmed by SUVs.
