iPhone 16 is about to be sold again in Indonesia

Apple has reached an agreement with Indonesia and may resell the iPhone 16 in the country. However, this has raised concerns from experts.

According to Reuters , on the afternoon of March 26, Indonesia's Industry Minister said Apple will be able to resell the iPhone 16 in the country from April 11, after the two sides reached an agreement.

Apple has agreed to build a research and development center near the capital Jakarta, along with factories to produce components for its products, including AirPods headphones, with an investment of more than $300 million .

The deal marks the end of a long-running dispute between Apple and Indonesia, where the Southeast Asian nation of about 280 million people had banned sales of the iPhone 16 until 2024 because Apple failed to meet its local content requirements.

At a press conference, Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the months-long negotiations with Apple had been “difficult,” but the company was now in the process of obtaining local certification to be able to sell phones in Indonesia.

“We are trying to maintain the principle of fairness,” Mr. Agus said. As long as it can bring value to “red and white,” he added, referring to the Indonesian flag.

Analysts worry that the requirement to ensure the proportion of domestic components in products could cause quality and cost problems, undermine investor confidence and set a precedent for protectionist measures in other countries.

CNN Indonesia quoted an Apple representative on March 26 as saying the company is pleased to expand its investment in Indonesia and provide all of its products to consumers.

Companies can often meet Indonesia's local content requirements through partnerships with domestic firms or sourcing components locally.

Although it has no manufacturing facilities in Indonesia, Apple has established developer training academies in the country since 2018.
