Apple has just officially introduced the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, the two most advanced models in the iPhone 17 series. Tim Cook described these as the most powerful and ambitious iPhones Apple has ever created.

Both models use the A19 Pro chip, the most powerful and energy-efficient processor Apple has ever developed. This is a 3nm chip with a 6-core CPU that Apple claims is “the fastest in a smartphone today” and a 5-core GPU.

Unusual orange color

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max only come in 3 color options including silver and blue, but stand out more than previous Pro lines in the new orange color.

In terms of design, Apple has switched from titanium to a unibody aluminum frame, and both the front and back are covered with scratch-resistant Ceramic Shield material, with the front being equipped with a super-durable second-generation coating. Despite the change in material, the size of the Pro line is almost unchanged.

Apple said the material change was due to thermal factors. The new chip generates more heat, so it needs an effective cooling system. To solve this, the company applied vapor chamber technology along with a chassis that supports passive cooling, helping the device operate stably even when handling heavy tasks.

Around the raised camera cluster, Apple takes advantage of the extra space to arrange complex components. At the same time, the company also integrated a plastic antenna strip around this area, helping to optimize the ability to catch 5G and Wi-Fi waves.

The advantage of the iPhone 17 Pro lies in its durability compared to previous generations. The monolithic aluminum frame reduces the glass area on the back to a small part, which contains wireless charging. Therefore, users reduce the worry of breaking the back.

Unlike the Air, the Pro line is equipped with the largest battery ever on an iPhone, providing the best battery life in history. However, Apple notes that this maximum battery life is only achieved on the eSIM version, without a physical SIM (as in the US market), thanks to the free space used for the battery. With the physical SIM version, the battery life will be about 2 hours lower.

Major lens upgrade

For the first time, all three cameras on the iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max have a resolution of 48 MP. The telephoto lens has been significantly improved, upgraded from 12 MP in the previous generation to 48 MP, and has a 56% larger sensor. Apple said this upgrade allows the telephoto to achieve the same quality optical zoom of up to 8x.

The company advertises that the camera can achieve "optical quality" zoom up to 20x. However, it is unclear how long the telephoto lens has a focal length. The default focal length for portraits is increased to 100mm, equivalent to 4x. This is quite close, not applicable in practice.

Machine learning and post-processing continue to play a major role in image processing. Color and depth of field can be improved after the user presses the shutter button. The front camera is also improved with an 18-megapixel sensor, supporting the Center Stage feature to automatically align the frame, in sync with other iPhone models released this year.
