The Israeli army announced on October 1st that its soldiers had begun an operation to invade Lebanon, according to NBC News.
"A few hours ago, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) began limited, localized, and targeted ground raids based on accurate intelligence, targeting Hezbollah terrorist targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon," the Israeli military announced.

Israel says the operation is aimed at protecting its citizens living in the north, along the Lebanese border.
Earlier, Lebanese media reported heavy shelling in the border village of Wazzani while the Lebanese army withdrew forces from positions along the border, heading at least 5 km north.
A fire broke out in southern Lebanon late on September 30th following the Israeli attack.
The Israeli military also declared its northern border region a "closed military zone," prohibiting civilians from entering. The military urged citizens not to disclose information about soldiers' movements, while some politicians posted articles suggesting the start of an operation, according to The Times of Israel .
Israeli officials have informed the U.S. of their plans to deploy troops to Lebanon, but with limitations on scale and duration. Two U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News that the operation appears to have begun.
Israeli media reported that the security cabinet approved the next phase of the anti-Hezbollah operation. During the meeting, several ministers expressed displeasure over US officials leaking information about the operation after receiving updates from Israel.

Meanwhile in Beirut, Israeli forces carried out at least six airstrikes in southern areas in the early hours of October 1, AFP reported, citing Lebanese security officials. The airstrikes followed Israeli calls for residents in the Hezbollah stronghold of Dahiyeh to evacuate.
U.S. officials say Washington has not seen any Iranian weapons movements signaling an imminent response, but Tehran is believed to be in a state of readiness to act swiftly if it decides to retaliate, according to NBC News. Iran has also signaled to the U.S. that it does not want a wider war.
