Israel launches second wave of strikes on Iran; over 100 aircraft involved in mission

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has confirmed that Israel attacked "important military and security facilities", Al Jazeera reported.

The Israeli targets were not made public. There were also reports that military facilities were attacked, but Iran's oil and nuclear facilities were not among the Israeli targets.

The Israeli military launched strikes on Iran on Saturday night, October 26. The surprise attack was in response to a missile attack from Tehran on October 1.

Meanwhile, the New York Times (NYT) quoted a US official as saying that Israel and the US have held consultations on the scale and type of targets that Tel Aviv plans to attack in response to Iran.

Consultations have been held between the White House and the Pentagon with the Israeli side.

At the same time, the US declared that it had no involvement in Israel's attacks on Iran. White House National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett said that Israel was carrying out targeted attacks on military targets in Iran in self-defense.

According to Russia's RIA Novosti news agency, at the time of the attack on Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Galant were present at the underground headquarters.

The bunker, located in the Defense Ministry complex in Tel Aviv, houses the Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Army, General Herzi Halevi, and other senior generals.

In response to Iran's claim that it had intercepted all of its missiles, the Jerusalem Post reported that Israeli officials did not believe that Iran's air defense system could have prevented the attack.

“This is a lie,” an Israeli official was quoted as saying by the Jerusalem Post, calling Iran’s attempt to intercept Israeli missiles a complete failure as Tehran failed to shoot down a single missile.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the IDF has launched a second series of attacks on Iran. This time, Israel's target was the city of Shiraz. In addition, JP wrote, more than 100 fighter jets participated in the attack on Iran.

According to AFP, successive explosions and streaks of light could be seen in the sky over central Tehran following the new blasts. Local media reported that four more explosions were heard in eastern Tehran and that “air defences were still operating” in the capital. Israeli media also reported that the first wave of Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian missile and air defense facilities.

Yisrael Ziv, former director of the IDF's Operations Department, called the Israeli airstrikes "historic" and said that over the past several hours, Israel had "done whatever it wanted" in the skies over Iran, targeting some of the country's most important military targets.
