At least 11 people died, 1 person is still missing in a landslide in Ha Giang

As of the afternoon of July 13, authorities have confirmed that at least 11 people have died and one victim is still missing in a landslide in Bac Me district ( Ha Giang ) that buried a passenger bus.

As reported by SGGP Newspaper, at around 4:00 a.m. on July 13, at Km 10+950, National Highway 34, in Ta Mo village, Yen Dinh commune, Bac Me district (Ha Giang province), a landslide occurred, burying a passenger car traveling on the Ha Giang - Cao Bang route.

Forces urgently rescue and search for victims

By the afternoon of July 13, authorities determined that one victim was still missing.

Upon receiving the information, functional forces in Ha Giang province were mobilized to urgently rescue the victims. Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Ha Giang Provincial People's Council Thao Hong Son and Vice Chairman of the Ha Giang Provincial People's Committee Ha Thi Minh Hanh were present at the scene to direct the rescue work.

Speaking to SGGP Newspaper, Ms. Lai Thi Huong, Chief of Office of the People's Committee of Ha Giang province, said that by around 9:00 a.m. on July 13, authorities had confirmed that 7 people had died due to the landslide. In addition, a number of injured people were promptly taken to Ha Giang General Hospital for emergency treatment by rescue forces.

According to SGGP Newspaper, at around 9am on July 13, the authorities had rescued the 16-seat passenger bus. However, the authorities have not yet determined exactly how many people were buried in the vehicle. When the landslide occurred, many people on the passenger bus got out of the vehicle, along with 3 more people from the 7-seat vehicle behind, helping to push the passenger bus out of the stuck area, when suddenly rocks and soil from the high hill poured down, sweeping away the passenger bus and many people.

Updated at 12:30 on July 13, authorities continued to search for 3 more victims, bringing the total number of deaths to at least 10 victims.

Information from Ha Giang province said that the estimated volume of soil and rock that fell was about 2,000m3 . Previously, on the afternoon of July 12, a landslide occurred at this exact location, paralyzing traffic on National Highway 34, with nearly 1,000m3 of soil and rock falling. However, by the afternoon of July 12, the Ha Giang Department of Transport and functional units had organized to clean up the mud and dirt to reopen the road. By the morning of July 13, due to continued heavy rain for many days, soil and rock in this area continued to slide.

Updated as of 4:30 p.m. on July 13, Ha Giang Provincial Police identified 11 deaths (bodies found, including: 4 in Tuyen Quang Province, 3 in Cao Bang Province, 2 in Ha Giang Province, 1 in Lai Chau Province and 1 in Hoa Binh Province); 1 person is still missing, address unknown; 4 injured people were taken to Ha Giang Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment since the morning of July 13.

Forces are still actively searching for missing victims.

The Standing Office of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said that functional forces continue to urgently search for missing people, clean up the scene, and ensure technical traffic in the landslide area on National Highway 34.
