Videos and photos posted by Mr Zoramthangs on X page show a bridge structure lying on the ground and smoke and dust surrounding it.
“This tragedy has affected me greatly,” he wrote. “My condolences go out to the families of the victims and I wish a speedy recovery to those injured.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in South Africa to attend the BRICS economic summit, also expressed his condolences to the families of those killed.
On X, he said he would donate $2,500 to the families of those killed and $600 to the injured, writing: “I am deeply saddened to hear about the incident in Mizoram.”
Mizoram is a mountainous state on the Indian border with Bangladesh and Myanmar. Villages and towns are linked by a network of unpaved roads and rudimentary dual carriageways, as well as a few highways and bridges.
India is a country that is constantly improving its infrastructure and has invested millions of dollars in upgrading its transport network. However, Tuesday’s bridge collapse is not the only one to make headlines in recent months.
In June, a four-lane concrete bridge under construction across the Ganges River in the eastern Indian state of Bihar collapsed for the second time in just over a year, raising questions about the quality of its construction.
In October 2022, a newly repaired suspension bridge in the town of Morbi, Gujarat collapsed, killing 135 people.
