Recently, a new wave of controversy has emerged in the international Kpop fan community, when members of girl group Blackpink were unexpectedly dragged into a controversy involving BTS' Suga.
The incident originated from the #SugaChallenge trend, which was said to justify Suga driving an electric scooter while drunk.
However, Army - the BTS fan community - accused this trend of being created by Blackpink (Blink) fandom to damage Army's reputation.
In response, some extremist members created similar trends called #RoséChallenge and #JennieChalleng, using edited images to spread false information about Blackpink members.
These posts quickly attracted public attention, with many posts reaching up to 940,000 views on the X platform.
This is not the first time that international K-pop fandoms have clashed. In December 2021, when BTS members first opened their personal Instagram accounts, V accidentally followed Jennie's account, leading to a wave of "backlash" criticism aimed at the Blackpink singer from overzealous fans.
According to Kbizoom , pop culture critic Ha Jae Geun believes that this phenomenon stems from cultural differences between domestic and international fandoms. He explained: "In Korea, there is an unwritten rule that other singers should not be mentioned, even within the same fandom. However, this culture has not yet taken root overseas."
The expert also emphasized that criticizing other artists is not the way to protect your favorite artists. This behavior only hurts both sides. There needs to be self-regulation in the international fan community, similar to what domestic fans have done in the past.
