Việt NamViệt Nam28/08/2024

Comrade Ka Ba To's birth name is Dinh Hong To, born in 1940, is an outstanding son of the Kor ethnic group, in a family with a rich tradition of patriotism and revolution in Tra Thuy commune, Tra Bong district, Quang Ngai province.

This is a famous place for the Tra Bong uprising - one of the first armed uprisings of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands base area and the earliest in the South during the resistance war against the US to save the country; opening a new historical period of combining revolutionary violence of the masses under the leadership of the Party with armed uprising to seize power for the people, directly affecting the Dong Khoi movement in the South in the years 1959-1960.

Since his childhood, having witnessed his parents and his father's comrades and teammates making revolutions, and his older brothers and sisters secretly working as liaisons for his uncles, Dinh Hong To had nurtured the dream of growing up to be a revolutionary like his parents and older brothers and sisters. In 1954, at the age of 14, he was able to gather with his uncles to the North and went to school in Hanoi for nearly ten years.

In September 1965, after graduating from Hanoi Pedagogical University, he faced a big choice in his life: either continue his research in the Soviet Union, or teach in Hanoi, or return to the South to fight. But with his will and enthusiasm, ready to fight and sacrifice for the people of the South who were drowning in enemy bombs, he asked to return to the South with the group of cadres and was assigned to Kon Tum by Zone V. Here, he was assigned to operate in the H30 area (now the eastern area of Dak Glei district).

During the years 1965-1974, in the Tak Min, Doan, Tung Bung, Tan Tuk, Xop, Dak Bla areas (now the areas of Ngoc Linh, Muong Hoong, Xop, Dak Choong communes of Dak Glei district), the guerrilla warfare movement developed strongly; for every 5 to 6 people, one was a guerrilla. This was a solid resistance base of H30 district, connected to the Provincial Party Committee base in the Mang Ri, Te Xang (Tu Mo Rong) area. This area was also the location of the first Cultural Supplementary School of Kon Tum province - where the movement of teaching and cultural supplementary education was vibrant in the province at that time.

At H30, he was assigned to be the first Principal of the Provincial Cultural Supplementary School. Overcoming countless difficulties, hardships and fierceness, teacher Ka Ba To tirelessly imparted knowledge to the young generation in this land. Many generations of students soon joined the fight, contributing to the liberation of their homeland and after the liberation, many comrades became key leaders in the commune and district.

After a period of teaching, seeing his fighting spirit, his superiors assigned him to work at the front (that is, in enemy-occupied areas), directly participating in destroying evil, breaking the yoke, and liberating the people at the front; and participating in teaching, training guerrillas, and fostering party members at the base. From here, he changed his name from Dinh Hong To to Ka Ba To to operate secretly.

Many guerrilla fighters were trained by him to become young, loyal party members and became commune secretaries such as comrade A My - Secretary of Xop commune; A Nhot - Secretary of Dak Bla commune (Dak Choong). After the victory of Dak Pek, liberating Dak Glei district (May 1974), he was in charge of the Head of the Propaganda Department of the H30 District Party Committee. After the complete liberation of the South (1975), H30 and H40 districts merged into Dak Glei district, he held the positions of Secretary of the District Youth Union and Chairman of the District People's Committee.

In 1977, he was Deputy Secretary of Gia Lai - Kon Tum Provincial Youth Union, a "leader" who, together with leaders of the provincial Youth Union at all levels, gathered generations of young people in the province to enthusiastically participate in reclaiming fields, building irrigation works, production, building the homeland and fighting against FULRO, protecting the southwestern border of the Fatherland.

In 1987, he was sent to study in the Soviet Union and returned as Chairman of the Gia Lai-Kon Tum Provincial Labor Federation (1988-1991), then Chairman of the Provincial People's Council (1991-2001), and Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee (1994-2001). Regardless of his position, he was always concerned about the lives of the people, especially those in remote, isolated, and border areas. He and the leaders of localities and units proposed many important solutions for the socio-economic development of the province after Kon Tum province was separated and re-established; always cared for and nurtured the next generation of young cadres and successor cadres. The important steps forward of Kon Tum province in all areas of life during this period were partly due to his dedicated and great contributions.

Although he retired in 2001, he continued to participate in social work as Chairman of the Kon Tum Province Association for the Promotion of Education, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Education; actively contributing to the promotion of education and talents in Kon Tum Province for nearly ten years. In recent years, despite his advanced age, he still devoted much of his heart to his work, participating in most of the province's important events, contributing a valuable voice to the common work of his home province.

Today, August 27, 2024, the heart of the communist soldier Ka Ba To, who had gone through a long journey of fighting, working, and dedicating himself to the land of Kon Tum, stopped beating at the age of 85. But his contributions have left a deep mark on the face of Kon Tum land, in the hearts of cadres and party members of Kon Tum province now and forever.
